TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology guard Julian Strickland
earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the
Year honors, and sophomore Austin Weatherford
(Cicero/Hamilton Heights) was named all-league in coaches
balloting results released today.
Strickland, who also earned honorable mention all-conference
accolades, averaged a team-high 11.7 points per game and shot 47%
from the field as a freshman. He also finished fourth on the
squad in rebounds (108), third in assists (38) and second in blocks
Strickland reached double figures in scoring 19 times in his
first season of college basketball, including five straight games
to close the 2010-11 season. His season-highs of 19 points
and six assists came in a narrow loss at NCAA Tournament
participant Hanover in February.
Weatherford ranked second on the Engineers in scoring (11.3 ppg)
and paced the squad with 97 assists to rank fourth in the
conference. Weatherford also shot 47% from the field and
ranked second on the team in rebounds (123) and steals (30).
On the season, Weatherford reached double figures in scoring 14
times, including five games of 20 or more points. His
career-high totals of 22 points occurred against Bluffton and
Franklin, and Weatherford recorded back-to-back 20-point
performances vs. Manchester and Anderson.
Rose-Hulman finished 16-10 overall on the season for the second
best single-season turnaround in school history and the team's best
record since 2003-04.
