TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled NCAA Division I Indiana State to a close first half, before the Sycamores pulled away to earn a 73-37 victory in a crosstown men's basketball scrimmage on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Michael Hallstein (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) led the Rose-Hulman offense with 11 points and added five rebounds. Senior Julian Strickland (Indianapolis/Pike) contributed nine points and seven rebounds, with sophomore Jimmy Miller (Indianapolis/North Central) adding five points.
Khristian Smith led the Indiana State offense with 18 points. Manny Arop and Jake Odum scored nine points each for the Sycamores.
Indiana State pulled out to an early 24-11 lead, before Rose-Hulman closed the first half with a strong run to move within 30-21 at the break. The Fightin' Engineers held Indiana State to 36% shooting from the field in the first half to stay within single digits.
Indiana State came out 4-4 from the field to start the second half and pulled away to earn the victory. The Sycamores have been picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference this season in a preseason poll of league coaches and media.
Rose-Hulman opens the season at No. 11 ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Nov. 22 at the Lopata Classic. The two-game weekend also features a matchup against the University of Chicago on Nov. 23.
