Marietta Tops W&J to Advance to Championship Round

regional-blueTERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Marietta College advanced to the championship round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional with a 6-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at Rose-Hulman.

The two-time defending national champion Pioneers (32-13) will return to action at 3:30 p.m. today against Manchester University (38-5-1) in the championship round.  Marietta will need to win today and at noon on Sunday to earn a bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship, while Manchester needs just one victory.

Freshman Jason Byers led the Marietta effort with a complete game pitching performance.  Byers scattered nine hits and struck out nine to move to 8-2 on the season.

Offensively, Chris Winpigler and Alex Toth had two hits each for the Pioneers.  Winpigler had two RBIs, with Toth adding a double, one run and one RBI for a balanced offensive attack.

Washington & Jefferson ended a memorable tournament run to complete the season with a 33-13 record.  The Presidents matched their previous NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament history by winning three postseason games, including a 13-inning win over Wooster and a 15-inning victory over Thomas More in a marathon Friday.

Kyle McLain led Washington & Jefferson with three singles, and Scott Brady had two hits.  Jared Baird allowed just three earned runs in his first start of the season and the longest outing of his career with an 8.1 inning performance.
