ANDERSON, IND. -- Anderson University pitcher Nolan Schaefer allowed just one single in seven innings of work, before Rose-Hulman's ninth inning rally fell short in a 4-1 Ravens victory in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon.
Nolan Schaefer allowed just a third inning single to Rose-Hulman freshman Donnie Waters (Franklin) in seven innings of work. Schaefer walked one and struck out three in his stint.
Offensively, Jacob Craft, Austin Young and Jeremy Shelmadine had two hits each for Anderson. Craft led the Raven performance with a home run and a double.
Rose-Hulman rallied with two singles and a double in the ninth, before Hall earned the final out. Sophomore Josh Hoeing (Rushville) and senior Bobby Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit singles, and junior Andrew Benitez (Mililani, Hawaii) put the Engineers on the board at 4-1 wth a double. Hall then ended the game with a strikeout.
Four pitchers combined to keep the Engineers within striking distance. Freshman Daniel Sutherland (Centennial, Colo./Regis Jesuit) tossed four innings and allowed just one hit and one run with one strikeout, before sophomore Jake Althouse (Converse/Oak Hill) threw a scoreless eighth.
Anderson improved to 21-16 overall and 15-7 in league play, while Rose-Hulman stands 14-20 and 11-9 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at home against Franklin College in another HCAC matchup on Tuesday at 6.
