BLUFFTON, OHIO -- Bluffton University scored two runs in the third inning and three in the sixth to earn a 7-2 baseball victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday.
Four Bluffton players had multiple hits, led by Kyle Niermann with three hits, two runs scored and a double. Nate Simonds scattered six hits with five strikeouts to earn the victory.
For Rose-Hulman, sophomore Josh Hoeing (Rushville) led the offensive effort with two singles.
Freshman Patrick Klima (South Bend/St. Joseph) and senior Donald Stopka (Grayslake, Ill./Carmel Catholic) had one hit and one run scored, while senior Bobby Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) contributed an RBI double for the Engineers.
Senior Ben Menich (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) struck out seven in five innings of work, and junior Kevin Farley (Centennial, Colo./Littleton) kept the Engineers within striking distance with three innings and one run allowed.
Rose-Hulman stands 2-1 in conference play and 5-10 overall, while Bluffton improved to 10-6 and 2-2 in league games. The two teams complete a three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
