LEXINGTON, KY. -- Transylvania University scored five
runs in the third inning and held off a late Rose-Hulman charge to
earn a 6-4 win in the finale of a three-game Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference baseball series on Sunday.
Despite the loss, Rose-Hulman remains just one-half game behind first place Anderson University in the HCAC standings. Rose-Hulman hosts Anderson in a single nine-inning game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Art Nehf Field.
Senior Will Burchett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) and junior Bobby Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led the Engineers with two hits each. Burchett scored one run with one RBI, and Newman had one RBI.
Sophomore Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) contributed a double to the offensive effort.
Ken Riley led the Transylvania offense with three RBIs and a double. Four Pioneer pitchers held the Rose-Hulman offense to seven hits and compiled nine strikeouts in the victory.
Freshman R.J. Carroll (Lexington, Ky./Catholic) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and sophomore Michael Bush (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) allowed just one run in three innings for Rose-Hulman.
Transylvania improved to 16-16 on the season, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 22-9. The Fightin' Engineers stand 13-4 in HCAC play, with Anderson just ahead of Rose-Hulman at 14-4 entering Tuesday's matchup.
