Gerald W. Roberts
Electrical Engineering
Class of 1985

I have been practicing law since earning my J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis, Indiana in 1996. Before becoming an attorney, I earned my B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rose-Hulman in 1985 and worked for more than ten years as an electrical engineer and engineering manager. My wife, two sons, and I recently loaded up the wagons and moved west so that I could join the law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP in Dallas, Texas, where I am focusing on complex business litigation, including litigation involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and other forms of intellectual property, and unfair competition. I have held a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance and am registered to practice in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The work ethic taught and demanded by Rose-Hulman has served me well in life and in both of my careers – engineering and law. Having the opportunity to collaborate with many of our nation’s best and brightest showed me that success is built at least as much from hard work and discipline as it is from raw talent. Also, a tremendous amount of credibility comes with a degree from such a highly ranked educational institution. No doubt, my Rose-Hulman degree has helped open doors to many professional opportunities and will continue to do so as the Institute’s national and international reputation continues to grow.
