The Fast Track Advantage:

If you have participated in mathematics competitions or are interested in mathematics competitions, you are coming to the right school. It has been said that while Rose-Hulman plays Division III athletics (football, basketball, etc.) we play DIVISION I MATHEMATICS. No school in Indiana has won or placed in more mathematics competitions than Rose-Hulman. Of the 31 Indiana College Mathematics Competitions Rose-Hulman has won 17. We participate yearly in the Putnam Exam and the National Modeling Competition. Many of the team members started at Rose-Hulman in Fast-Track Calculus. With Calculus and Differential Equations completed during the Freshman year, Fast-Track students are ready to take the highest level mathematics, science, and engineering courses which are the hallmarks of leaders on our mathematics teams.

Each year several Rose-Hulman students present mathematical papers at local, regional, and national conferences. Many of these students have been Fast-Track Calculus students. Because of their advanced standing in mathematics courses, Fast-Trackers are better able to do mathematical research and to participate in conferences. In addition, several Fast-Trackers have taken advantage of Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs. These programs (offered at several universities in the country) allow participants to spend a summer doing research in an area of interest to the student. In addition to earning money during the summer doing mathematics, these students also attend conferences and usually have their work published. Several Fast-Trackers have also spent a semester or year abroad studying in Hungary, Germany, or Ireland. Because of the extra credits acquired in Fast-Track, students are able to avail themselves of these programs without having to spend an extra year in school.

Fast Track Calculus offers many advantages to incoming students. First, you will work with the best entering freshmen. You will also be exposed to Rose-Hulman life early, so the transition to the fall quarter will be very smooth. The time and credits gained through Fast-Track allow a more flexible future. Minors and double majors will be much easier to pursue. Finally, Advanced Placement credits may be used to their greatest advantage through Fast-Track Calculus.

  • Best Entering Freshman   Track Calculus offers many advantages to incoming students. First, you will work with some of the best entering freshmen. You will also be exposed to Rose-Hulman life early, so the transition to the fall quarter will be very smooth. The time and credits gained through Fast-Track allow a more flexible future. Minors and double majors will be much easier to pursue. Finally, Advanced Placement credits may be used to their greatest advantage through Fast-Track Calculus.
  • Early Acclimatization During the five weeks of FTC, the students are immersed in the atmosphere of the college campus. The students participate in intramural activities, study, attend class, dine, and work together just as they would during the regular school year. Students also learn what type of study habits are required to succeed at Rose-Hulman. Because of the early "acclimatization" to college life, Fast-Track students are prepared for the life style they will lead during their four year college career. Rarely do Fast-Track students experience any adjustment problems once the school year has started.
  • Full Use of AP Credits By using their AP credits students are able to take Sophomore (and sometimes Junior) level courses during their Freshman year. This frees up slots in the Sophomore, Junior and Senior years, again allowing students to expand their educational horizons.

A More Diverse Future

By receiving 15 credit hours for calculus, students have a wider variety of courses in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences available to them from the beginning of their studies, and usually find such courses easier and more meaningful. Moreover, with the additional credit hours already on their records, Fast-Track students often find that they are better able to branch out and pursue not just a single major (or degree) but multiple majors (or degrees) during their undergraduate studies. Other FTC students utilize their head-start to obtain technical certificates in language, management studies, imaging systems or consulting engineering. Still others take extra electives in order to obtain one or more minors in areas of special interest, or begin graduate studies as seniors. In many cases the 15 hours of credit are actually expanded to between 20 and 30 hours of credit because the students can take extra courses without an overload.

  • Example #1: A freshman student who would normally take 15 hours during a term. Because differential equations is only a four hour course (not five as for calculus), this allows the student to take an "extra" course. Many students have taken courses which normally fall in their Junior year. Thus, the student is provided with possibilities for extra electives, etc. in future years at "no extra cost".
  • Example #2: A student who wishes to major in either Computer Science or Physics. Because of the number of mathematics course required for these majors, it is extremely easy for a student to double major in Computer Science and Mathematics, or Physics and Mathematics. By taking FTC, a student normally can complete the Computer Science/Mathematics double major with only a two-hour overload during one quarter (usually during the Junior year). Depending on a student's Advanced Placement (AP) credits in Physics and Chemistry, a student may acquire a Physics/Mathematics double major without ever having to take any overloads. Also, without overloading a student may be able to get a Chemistry/Mathematics, Chemical Engineering/Mathematics, or Economics/Mathematics double major.
