Sunrayce 93
Arlington, Texas to Minneapolis, Minn.
June, 1993

Winning awards for technical performance and teamwork, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology came back with an improved solar-powered car for Sunrayce 93, a seven-day, 1,100-mile race from Arlington, Texas, to Minneapolis, Minn. With a new motor system, solar array and electrical system, the Solar Phantom II finished 15th out of 34 college teams. Most importantly, the car failed to suffer a substantial mechanical or electrical breakdown during the competition. "We had a good, dependable car," said Team Leader Dylan Schickel. The team's woes were caused by Mother Nature: Clouds and rain covered four days of the race route, causing some Sunrayce participants to call the race "Rainrayce 93." During sunny days, the Solar Phantom II ran with the lead pack, finishing 11th on Day 7, a 161-mile trek from Des Moines, Iowa, to Albert Lee, Minn. "The students should be proud of their efforts, considering the obstacles they faced," said Rose-Hulman President Samuel Hulbert, who waved the checked flag as the team crossed the finish line in Minneapolis. "They showed great determination and learned invaluable educational lessons in the process." A highlight of the year came in May, 1993, when the Solar Phantom II made a ceremonial lap around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway prior to the Indianapolis 500. Ed Stacy was the driver for the historic event. Other drivers during Sunrayce were David Bailey, Jeff Kwok and Jonathan Rich. Ron White was the mechanical engineering systems coordinator, while Eric Wandell was the team's chief financial officer.
