Bandwidth Restrictions

Rose-Hulman's Internet connection is a full DS3 (45 Mbits) provided by Indiana Fiber Network. Due to the fact that we do not have unlimited bandwidth IAIT allocates bandwidth on a per-user basis. Every student, staff, and faculty member is guaranteed bandwidth however if they do not use up their full amount of allocated bandwidth other users may use it until they choose to do so. This process is automated by IAIT routers.

The internet connection is a shared resource. Each computer actively transmitting or receiving data is given an equal portion. The amount of bandwidth allocated to each computer is constantly adjusted based on the number of active computers at any given moment in time, thus insuring that each computer gets fair treatment.

Downloads from rose-hulman.edu\dfs\software and from the Computer Science and Software Engineering servers do not count against a user's bandwidth.

Recreational Usage Bandwidth Restrictions

Recreation usage of the network has been limited according to the following schedule. Recreational usage is typically defined as peer to peer file sharing programs. This kind of traffic is completely blocked in the wireless network and in classrooms.

Time Mbps
7am - 11pm, Mon-Fri 0.9
11pm - 7am, MTWT 2.4
11pm - 7am, Fri-Mon 3.6

Upload Bandwidth Restrictions

Uploads for all campus users have been capped at 512Kb/s. This was instituted due to a large increase in the number of uploads of campus users.
