Solar 300
Phoenix International Raceway, Arizona
April 1991
Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology's Solar Phantom showed it could race with the world's
best cars when it finished a strong fifth (out of nine teams) in the
inaugural Solar 300 race, an event conducted at the Phoenix
International Raceway in Arizona. Registering laps in excess of 47
mph, the car ran alongside the professional Spirit of Biel, winner
of the World Solar Challenge, and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. "We showed that we can compete with some of the
best teams in the world," said Jeff Pahl, Rose-Hulman's chief
of engineering. "The car is still a great educational
experience. The racing is fun. I'm going to miss the competition and
the opportunity to talk with engineering students from MIT, Arizona
State and Western Michigan. Our purpose is to learn and we're
continuing to do that." Chris Kaus was team leader of the 1990
team, while Dylan Schickel served as finance director. Drivers
included Chris Kabrick, David Bailey and Jeff Kwok.
