A dream by three electrical engineering students in 1988 to enter a national cross country solar car race became a reality two years later when Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology crossed the starting line at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center. Novices in the world of solar energy and car design, the Engineers qualified 19th (out of 32 cars) and suffered electrical problems in the first two days of the contest. In fact, team members rewired the Solar Phantom's electrical system after completing less than 10 miles on Day 2. The team found itself in 30th place after the disappointing Day 2, but made a steady climb up the standings in the final eight days. Rose-Hulman moved up to 25th place by Day 4 and had a 14th-place finish on Day 8. Rose-Hulman would eventually finish 20th. But the lessons learned would serve the students for a lifetime -- the importance of teamwork, meeting deadlines and vehicle testing. Ken Whitehead and John Schultz were co-leaders of the 1990 team, while Kynan Church was the chief mechanical engineer and driver. Other drivers were Rich Woodruff, Chris Kabrick, Alan Manche and Jeff Kwok.
