(See pictures from the Preview Run in our Photo Album)

The Solar Phantom Team joined race officials from ASC and team members from six other solar car teams in a 10-day, 2,200-mile trip from Chicago, IL to Palm Springs, CA to preview and test the planned route for ASC 2001. The Solar Phantom and MIT's Manta both completed the long race route which followed old Route 66. Lincoln Land Community College also drove from Chicago, IL to Springfield, IL to test a new fuel cell.

The Solar Phantom team was composed of students from Rose-Hulman, the University of Missouri-Rolla, Ohio State University, and Iowa State University. The Solar Phantom was the first to complete the journey to Palm Springs with MIT's car coming in approximately one hour later. The Solar Phantom completed the course almost without any flaws, experiencing only a few mishaps as the car traveled the route. Overall, the Phantom's performance was excellent.

The Manta team was composed of students from MIT, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
