To use SciFinder Scholar, you must download and install the SciFinder Scholar
software by following the installation instructions below. SciFinder Scholar can be
used on campus or off campus via the Rose-Hulman VPN. It can also be
accessed in the library from any of the library reference terminals.
Some important info:
Rose-Hulman is part of a larger consortium sharing "seats" to this database.
This means that a "certain" number of institutions share a "certain" number of
seats. Therefore, if all seats are taken, we will not be able to access
the database and will receive a concurrency denial (turned away). There
are more institutions than there are seats, but we were told that we could
expect roughly a 90% success rate when connecting to the database.
Rose-Hulman users can only occupy one seat at a time. While this may seem
restricting to us, it actually prevents larger institutions from hogging
multiple seats, thus reducing our overall connect success rate. Therefore,
we are told that most concurrency denials will be due to someone at
Rose-Hulman being connected. To subscribe to one seat just for Rose-Hulman
(or multiple seats) would drive up the price by the thousands of dollars, thus
placing the database out of our price range. To put this in perspective,
Purdue University only has two seats for their entire University. But
thanks to the creative pricing models by CAS, we now have a very valuable
resource we have wanted for a long time.
Other Tips:
- Be sure to logoff your session when you are finished by clicking the "Exit"
button on the top right corner of the screen. Users are logged off
automatically after 20 minutes of inactivity, but you should always logoff
manually to free up the seat in case another Rose-Hulman user is waiting to log on.
- Since Rose-Hulman is part of a national consortium, the best time to
search is in the morning hours since there would be less people on the west
coast connected. This will lessen the chance of a concurrency denial.
