Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics
Citation to
Harold Hanes
The Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics annually recognizes the accomplishments and contributions
of Section members who have been identified as extraordinarily successful
teachers in the mathematical sciences and whose teaching effectiveness has
been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.
The successful teaching style of this year's award recipient is guided
by two principles: that his courses seek to effectively challenge and
inspire students and that students acquire mathematical ideas and skills
through active involvement. One of his former students has written of
him, "I learned to love my discipline. His habits of lecture preparation,
delivery, and homework feedback have been models for my own 27 years of
teaching."
He has contributed to teaching of mathematics at many levels and in
many ways including his leadership of student/faculty collaborative research
projects covering numerous topics including simulation, the Oracle database
and Hypercard authoring. He is recognized throughout his college as an
energetic teacher and innovator. Above all, he is remembered by his students
as a mentor who encouraged them to venture deeply into mathematics. He
has provided living testimory that mathematicians can enrich their college
community.
It is my privilege to present this award to Harold Hanes, of Earlham
College.
