Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award
Citation to
Duane Deal
The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993
to honor a member of the section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary
contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the
stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section,
namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education
in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate
level.
Today I am privileged to be able to present the Indiana Section Distinguished
Service Award to an individual whose service to his institution, mathematics,
and the MAA has entered its fifth decade. His official positions have
included being a superbly effective classroom teacher; chair of his department;
vice-chair, chair, and sectetary-treasurer of the Section; editorial board
member for the thirty-first NCTM Yearbook; columnist for the Indiana Mathematics
Teacher; and the national president of Sigma Zeta Honorary Science Society.
But we also have come to know him as a friend and colleague who, even
during his retirement years, has never tired of bicycling across the Ball
State University campus, traveling by train to national meetings, or talking
about the history or dedagogy of mathematics.
Congratulations to Duane Deal, the recipient of the 1995 Distinguished
Service Award.
Mic Jackson, Chair
Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
