HEALTH
SERVICES
Health Services is primarily interested in the
prevention of disease and the treatment of minor
injuries and acute illnesses. The Institute
maintains limited health care services, with a
nurse and a physician who keep limited office hours
on campus five days a week. A medical form sent to
all entering students requests a thorough physical
examination, history of immunizations and other
background information. These records are kept on
file in the Health Services office and are mandatory
conditions of enrollment.
The Institute cannot assume responsibility for the
regular treatment of a student’s chronic condition
present when the student enters the Institute;
however, the Health Service will supervise the
treatment and general health while the student is
under the care of the family physician.
Ordinarily, common medicines and drugs are
furnished free. Certain services, such as X-ray
examinations, special drugs and laboratory tests
are not available. These can be obtained off
campus via orders from the Health Service.
Rose-Hulman requires all students to show evidence
of up to date immunizations, including a current
TB skin test prior to enrollment. Failure to
provide this information will prevent enrollment
of next quarter’s classes. Rose-Hulman also
requires all students to either show evidence of
health insurance coverage or to purchase such
insurance through the Institute.
COUNSELING SERVICES
The Student Counseling Center provides individual
counseling services to students faced with a broad
range of issues, such as academic stress,
homesickness, relationships, family difficulties,
and career concerns, to name a few. Couples
counseling and group counseling is also provided
according to the needs of the students. Staff is
available for consultation services to students,
faculty, and staff and is willing to provide
educational workshops as needed. Counseling
services are confidential and are free to all
students. Referrals are made on an as needed
basis. The staff is comprised of master’s level
counselors who are currently enrolled as
second-year doctoral Counseling Psychology
students at Indiana State University. Supervision
is provided to the counselors by a licensed
Counseling Psychologist affiliated with Indiana
State University.
STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS OR DISABILITIES
Rose-Hulman will work with students with special
needs or disabilities to enable them to do their
best while enrolled. The Director of International
Student Services and Special Programs serves as an
advocate and contact person for any students with
special needs. Students needing special
accommodations for housing, academics, or other
situations must provide the Director with
documents establishing the disability and a need
for accommodation, which the student must specifically
request. Documents may be submitted from
counselors, doctors, previous schools, or other
professionals to the Director after the student
has been admitted to Rose-Hulman. Any documents
submitted by students with special needs should be
dated within three years.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The Director of International Student Services and
Special Programs is located in the Student Affairs
Office in the Hulman Union Building. This office
provides information and counseling to
international students on immigration and visa
issues and other issues of concern.
No appointment is necessary. The Director of
International Student Services acts as an advocate
for international students and welcomes the
opportunity to work with each and every one who
chooses to study at Rose-Hulman.
ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT
At registration, each freshman is introduced to a
member of the faculty who will serve as the
student’s academic adviser. The academic adviser
has a dual function of assisting the student with
course planning and helping with problems related
to college work and life on campus. In the middle
of each grading period students receive progress
reports through their adviser, providing the
opportunity to discuss any problems related to
academic progress. Students should feel welcome to
visit with their academic advisers at any time.
THE LEARNING CENTER
The Learning Center, located in the lower level of
the Logan Library, offers academic assistance for
any freshman or sophomore Rose-Hulman course as
well as most upper-level classes. Peer
tutors—specially trained students supervised by
professional staff—do the majority of the tutoring
at the Center, working one-on-one with students.
Professors encourage students to participate in
Learning Center programs and study sessions.
The New Residence Hall houses the Learning
Center’s support program targeted to students in
sophomore level courses. A team of 6 tutors and a
graduate assistant live in the hall to assist
students during scheduled hours. Additional
information about the Learning Center is available
at www.rose-hulman.edu/lc.
RETENTION
During the last 5-10 years, Rose-Hulman has
graduated approximately 75% of those students who
first entered as freshmen. Over the ten-year period
experience has been that from 6-8 percent of
entering freshmen withdraw during or at the end of
the freshman year, another 8-12 percent leave by
the end of the sophomore year, and approximately 4
percent at some point in their junior or senior
years. A majority of those who choose to leave the
Institute do so to pursue degree programs not
offered by Rose-Hulman.
CAREER SERVICES AND EMPLOYER RELATIONS
The Career Services Office counsels and assists
graduates in securing employment in the
professions, business and industry. It establishes
contact with prospective employers, as well as
graduate schools, aids in the preparation of
applications, and arranges appointments and
interviews. The Office also assists students in
obtaining part-time, summer employment, and
cooperative experiences as well as placement upon
graduation. They also assist with resume writing,
cover letters, and employer searches.
The placement record has been an outstanding one.
Over 300 recruiters come to RoseHulman annually to
offer a variety of positions. Each Rose-Hulman
graduate has several on-campus interview
opportunities and often more than one job offer
from which to choose. Graduates are currently
working in all 50 states and in 20 foreign
countries.
Services are also available to alumni seeking
employment. Employers seeking experienced
personnel file their job needs with the Career
Services Office, which, in turn, posts these
opportunities on the alumni web site.
Through continuous contacts with business and
industry and communications with Rose-Hulman
personnel, information regarding part-time jobs on
and off campus is recorded in the Career Services
Office. Students seeking part-time employment are
encouraged to contact this office regarding job
opportunities.
The employer relations program provides a well
established career marketplace and continually
strives to add new markets for Rose-Hulman
graduates.
