For detailed instructions searching or on searching the entire Wabash Valley
Visions and Voices digital collection, please visit
http://visions.indstate.edu/cdm4/help.php#advanced_search. These tips
are specific to the Rose-Hulman collection.
1) How to Search only the Rose-Hulman collection
2) Conducting a Basic Search
3) Conducting an advanced search (searching within specific
fields).
4) Searching for specific types of Rose-Hulman items
(Modulus, Images, Video, etc).
5) Viewing and navigating through a copy of the Modulus.
1) How to Search only the Rose-Hulman
collection.
- From the main WV3 web site click Search All Collections
- At the bottom of the page, click Clear all then select the check
box next to

Logan Library.

2) Conducting a Basic Search (Across all
fields)
- Enter search terms into the desired type of search (All of the Words,
The exact phrase, All of the words, None of the words).
This will search for your search terms across all of the database fields.

*********************************************************
3) Conducting an advanced
search (searching within specific fields).
- Click Selected Fields
- In the left drop down menu, select the type of search to conduct on the
field (e.g. All the words, Exact phrase, etc.)
- Select the field to search for those terms in.
- TIP: The fields most useful for searching in include Title,
Description, Transcription, Subject, Type, and Rose-Hulman type.
Title: Search's document's title field. Produces a narrow
search. Not good for searching the Modulus.
Description: A good field to search when trying to narrow down a
search. The Description field provides a brief description of the item.
Simultaneously searches the Transcription field when searching all collections
and not just Rose-Hulman's.
Transcription: Some items have full text attached to it such as the
Modulus Yearbook, Oral history interviews, and the Juliet Peddle Architectural
Drawings. Searching the Description field when searching all
collections and not just Rose-Hulman's.
Subject: Searches descriptive subject terms assigned to items.
Type: Searches the item type. Options are Image, Text,
Sound, Collection, Dataset, Event, Interactive, Resource, Moving Image, Still
Image, Physical Object, Service, Software.
Rose-Hulman Type: These are terms that are specific to the
Rose-Hulman collection. These include Modulus, Image, Video, Sound,
Object. (see next topic for searching within Rose-Hulman Types).

4) Searching for specific types of
Rose-Hulman items (Modulus, Images, Video, etc).
It is possible to narrow your search by specific types of Rose-Hulman items.
For instance, you can search for items on "Hulbert" from only the Modulus,
the Rose-Hulman student yearbook. NOTE: It is best to search for Modulus
items using a basic search. However, if too many non-Modulus items are
retuned, then follow these instructions for searching only the modulus.
Searching by "Rose-Hulman Type"
1) Select only the Rose-Hulman collection to search as described
above.
2) Search by Selected Fields.
3) In first search field, enter keyword(s) and select a field to
search from, such as Transcript or Description.
4) In the next search box, select the type of item to search by selecting
Rose-Hulman type and type in one of the following: modulus, image,
sound, video, or object. (See picture below).
Images: Scanned photographs, most of which are of Rose-Hulman.
Modulus: The student yearbook. Each page is scanned as an
image with the text of each page attached and fully searchable via the
Transcript field.
Video: Digitized video clips.
Sound: Digitized audio clips such as oral history interviews.
Oral history interviews have full transcripts attached.
Object: Photographs of physical objects owned by the Rose-Hulman
Archives.

5) Viewing and navigating through a
copy of the Modulus.
After you have conducted your search, results can be viewed by clicking
either the image of the item or the file name. When a page of the Modulus
is selected, that page is displayed in context to the rest of the book, meaning
all pages of a Modulus are grouped together as one object. Therefore, the
rest of that volume can be browsed by simply clicking Next Page, Previous Page,
or selecting a specific page on the left. See image below.

Line all in red shows current page. Items with red brackets and red
asterisk are other pages in that book that contain the same search criteria.
Views
Each page or book can be viewed three different ways by selecting a
view from the View drop down list to the left and clicking Go. (See
Picture below)
1) Document Description - Will show information about that book.
2) Page Description - Will show information about that specific page,
including full text.
3) Page & Text - Will open another window displaying the page on the left
and the text on the right.

Searching within a Modulus
You can also search within the open modulus by entering search terms in the
search box labeled "Search this Object."
