Oak Kitchen Floor
This floor was a project and a half. When we decided to
redo our kitchen, we debated the floor choice and eventually decided
to match the oak floor in the remainder of the house. The problem was
that the flooring planks were so narrow (1 and a half inches), I could
not purchase them anywhere. As such, I made the planks from red oak
boards I purchased from my usual supplier. That meant that I had to
joint each board, then cut it into oversized strips, let them sit for
a few days, joint each of the strips and cut them to width. Next, I
used my dado blade to cut the grooves. I flipped the dado blades to
cut the tongues to width. Finally, I used my table saw blade to cut
the tongues to length. In between, I sorted out and discarded
unsightly pieces. After installing and sanding the floor, I stained it
with a half and half blend of red oak and ??? MinWax stain. It is
clear-coated with MinWax water-based PolyUrethane for floors. The floor
came out real nice. I really like the texture of wood. I tell people
that it is one of the nicest pieces of furniture we own.
