Not much has changed since the time of the writing. The population, discounting students, rose to about 40,000; it is still a fairly busy and commercial city; naturally, the fine buildings have been torn down or stand empty; it is still a railway center, and rumor has it that Dillinger never robbed a bank in Terre Haute, because of all the raillines criss-crossing town; there are still several fine educational institutions in town; there ain't no steamer no more, the train does not cross the Wabash any longer either, but I-70 does.
