How to restore the engine of a Triumph TR6
How to restore the engine of a Triumph TR6
Follow these easy steps to restore the engine on your car:
- Take the engine out of the car.
- Take it apart and have the machine shop do some machining.
- Before assembling the engine, generously rinse the engine in the
bathtub to remove any dust that may have sneaked in. In order to
avoid scratching your bathtub, place a couple of bathtowls in it.
- Next, put the engine together. Since the most natural time to
restore the engine of a british roadster is during the winter, the
kitchen seems like the most natural place to do this. I am right now
checking the timing of the individual lobes on the camshaft. I
indexed the camshaft already.
- Finally, put the engine back into the car and hook up everything.
It helps to have a british sportscar from the 70's or earlier, as it
is obvious where everything goes. Oh, you want to have someone help
you in the process of hoisting the engine back into the car. After all
a TR6 is a small car. Also, it helps to have someone around to comment
on everything you do. Just kidding. In the picture, you see my buddy
Sam, who knows more about cars and rebuilding engines than I do, which
was helpful since I have never done this before. Btw. before you start
up the engine, do what everyone tells you to do, but do take into
consideration that the thermostat may be stuck, something we ran into.
:( Lucky us, the engine survived.
