Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases

p. 154 - 156 (up to "The Quantitative Kinetic Molecular Model"

1.    Has the Kinetic Molecular Theory been proven to be true?  Explain your answer by describing the purpose of models and theories.

2.    State the postulates of the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases.  For each postulate, provide a brief description of why or how it is consistent with your observations of the behavior of gases.

p. 160 (The Meaning of Temperature) - bottom of page 161

3.    Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.  If a given particle has a lot of kinetic energy, that means it is moving really fast.  If it has only a little kinetic energy, it is moving very slowly.  Do particles move faster or slower as their temperature is increased?

4.    Gas particles in a container are moving a variety of velocities.  It is useful to report just one number when considering the velocity of gas particles in a container.  Root mean square velocity is one way to express this average.  Learn the equation for root mean square velocity.  Which value of R is most practical to use in this equation?

5.    1 J = 1 kg m2 s-2.  What unit of mass should you use form M in order to have the units cancel in this equation?  How can you get there from g/mole?

6.    What happens to the velocity distribution as temperature increases?
