Ph112 Exam-1 Review Sheet

*      For this exam the material covered in class is mainly from chapters 9, 10, and the first two sections of chapter 11.

*      Following are some of the important topics and concepts that have been covered in class.

Make sure that:

1.      You are comfortable with the basic equations of rotational dynamics that assume a constant angular acceleration (table 9-1).

2.      You understand the relationship between linear and angular variables.

3.      You can solve conservation of energy problems where part of the kinetic energy of the system is in rotational form.

4.      You are clear on the concept of moment of inertia for a single particle, collection of particles, rigid uniform objects, and composite objects made of simpler rigid uniform objects.

5.      You are familiar with the two axes theorems that were discussed in class.

6.      You can calculate torque and understand the right hand rule.

7.      You can formulate the statement of Newton’s second law (rotational form) and use it alongside the linear form.

8.      You are comfortable with the notion of angular momentum and its connection with the linear momentum.

9.      You can analyze situations that require conservation of angular momentum.

10. You practice problem solving (a lot). While it is essential to understand the concepts, you need to be familiar with a variety of situations that can be presented in a given problem. The only way to master problem solving is by actually doing lots of problems.
