February 10, 2014

Homework Hotline Tutor

Ready To Help: The Homework Hotline has approximately 140 student tutors on staff, and more than 30 are available to answer calls and online requests Sunday through Thursday, 7p.m. to 10p.m.

Rose-Hulman’s Homework Hotline has surpassed a major milestone – 500,000 math and science tutoring sessions with middle and high school students across Indiana. This total represents combined calls, online chats, and e-mail sessions with tutors since the hotline’s opening in 1991.

“This is an amazing achievement for the Homework Hotline,” says Homework Hotline Director Susan Smith Roads. “We are grateful for our tutors and their long history of serving as excellent resources for thousands of Indiana students who need extra help in math and science. We’re looking forward to reaching many more students in the future.”

The Homework Hotline is a free math and science tutoring service for students in grades 6-12. Phone lines, e-mail, and online chats are available between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (ET), Sunday through Thursday, through May.

Tutors are Rose-Hulman students who provide free help with homework problems to students calling (toll free) 1-877-ASK-ROSE (1-877-275-7673) or submit questions by e-mail and online chat at www.AskRose.org.

Approximately 140 tutors are on staff, and more than 30 are available each night to answer calls and online requests. All of the hotline’s tutors are certified by the National Tutoring Association and are selected based on their technical knowledge and communication skills.

During the hotline’s first school year of operations—1991-1992—tutors answered 328 calls for help with math and science. Since then, the number of tutoring sessions, as well as the ways in which students can receive help, have expanded greatly. Tutors began answering questions by e-mail in 2003 and online chats began in 2008.

Students who use the Homework Hotline report overwhelming satisfaction with the service. According to survey data, nearly 100 percent of callers reported they will use the Homework Hotline again and would recommend the hotline to others.
