Stefani Vande Lune

Stefani Vande Lune is the newest recipient of Rose-Hulman's Jess R. Lucas Alumni Leadership Award, which is bestowed each year upon a former member of the institute's residence life staff for distinguished career achievements.

Lucas' widow, Gwynne Lucas, was on hand to present the award with Tom Miller, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Pete Gustafson, retired vice president for student affairs and dean of students. Jess Lucas served as Rose-Hulman's vice president for student affairs and dean of students from 1976 until his retirement in 2000.

Vande Lune earned a bachelor's degree in applied biology from Rose-Hulman in 2006 and two years later added a master's degree in biomedical engineering. She then went on to receive a law degree from George Washington University Law School (Washington, D.C.) in 2011, and was a judicial law clerk for two federal appeals court judges and an intellectual property litigation associate for the law office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP in the nation's capital.

The Kokomo, Ind., native is now a first-year student at the Indiana University School of Medicine's South Bend, Ind., campus, with a scholarship from the U.S. Navy. Vande Lune will have a commitment as a military medical officer after successfully earning her medical degree, anticipated in May of 2020.

"Stefani has made contributions in education, law, medicine and, in the near future, the military. She is truly a leader among leaders," says Miller. "She is an exceptional leader and scholar. However, most importantly, she is an even better person."

At Rose-Hulman, Vande Lune was student body president during the 2005-06 school year, represented students as a member of a presidential search committee, served as a Homework Hotline tutor and supervisor, was a leader for the campus' Chi Omega sorority chapter and was a biomedical engineering research assistant. For residence life, she spent one year as a Sophomore Advisor and two years as a Resident Assistant for freshmen living in the Baur-Sames-Bogart residence hall, was a graduate assistant for student affairs and Greek life operations, and was head counselor for Rose-Hulman's summer Operation Catapult program.

Vande Lune received the Herman Moench Distinguished Senior Commendation in 2006 and the Rose-Hulman Alumni Association's Distinguished Young Alumni Award in 2014, and recently completed a decade of service on the association's Young Alumni Council.
