Fun-Filled Intramural Activities Cited Among Nation's Best

Active Campus Lifestyle: There are 32 intramural activities each school year to help students, faculty, and staff members, regardless of experience and ability. Approximately 1,300 students participate in events annually.

A Wiffle Ball home run hitting contest; football's punt, pass, and kick competition; and a Strongest Engineer Challenge are among several fun-filled intramural activities keeping Rose-Hulman students active and in shape for their academic course work.

Those events are among the reasons has cited the Institute for having one of the nation's 50 best intramural programs. The online college ranking service considered such matters as activity organization, quality of sports facilities, and frequency of intramural programs.

"[Rose-Hulman] aims to develop programs that provide students with a fun environment to get in shape and stay active," stated in announcing this year's best intramural program ranking.

Rose-Hulman offers 32 intramural activities each school year involving approximately 1,300 of the institute's 2,260 undergraduate students. A total of 850 students participated in such fall activities as kickball, indoor soccer, flag football, tennis, dodgeball, floor hockey, and badminton, along with a golf scramble and cross country meet.

Winter Intramural activities include basketball, volleyball, bowling, chess, billiards, racquetball, and sno-ball softball. Then, in the spring, students may participate in ultimate Frisbee, table tennis, swimming, track and field, and sand volleyball. They can also compete in a Strongest Engineer, a home run derby, and disc golf activities.

"The intramural program is an important part of student life at Rose-Hulman, providing a healthy environment through which all students, faculty, and staff may enjoy a broad variety of competitive and recreational activities, regardless of experience and ability," says Jordan Barrett, assistant director of recreational sports and athletic facilities. He oversees intramurals and club sports. "The wide selection of activities offered on campus provides students the opportunity to be active and get in shape; develop teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and personal relationships; and, most importantly, have fun."

Other colleges on the Best Intramural Programs list included Drexel University, Kansas State University, Missouri State University, University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Tampa.
