Course Requirements

• Homework assignments are listed on a separate syllabus and will be collected roughly weekly. Homework will be graded and returned to you. It is your responsibility to seek help on all problems that you cannot do. (See ``Resources'', below.) I would like to keep close track of which problems students have the most trouble with so I am going to ask for progress reports; more on this below.

• You are encouraged to work in groups of two or more on the homework. However, each student should turn in a separate paper and should note on his or her paper who her or his collaborators were, if any.

• You will be expected to be able to use Maple to do your homework, when appropriate. You may be required to use Maple on quizzes and exams. Early in the term you may wish to use some other technology; rest assured that this will only make life more difficult later in the term.

• There will be quizzes based on the homework administered every week during class (except when there is an exam). You may be required to do some quizzes ``by hand''.

• I am going to be making regular reading assignments from the textbook. Please do as much of these as possible before every class, and make up those which you have missed. I would like these to be submitted by e-mail and I suggest you keep copies of your submissions. I will not be posting answers to these or a list who has submitted which ones; it is up to you to keep track of reading questions. All of this is necessary because you will be doing examples in class, not me.

• With each reading question answer, please also submit a list of the homework questions you have completed since the previous reading question (if any), and also a list of those which are giving you trouble. I will only accept reading question answers which include some note about the homework. This is also a good place to let me know if you think I am going too fast or too slow in class.

• There will be three hour exams given in class during the quarter. The exams will always include problems from the homework and labs. There will be a block final exam for the course. You may be required to do some exams ``by hand''. On the exams, you will be responsible for everything covered in lecture, everything in the readings, and everything on the homework and labs, unless specifically told otherwise.

• There will be a small written project for the course.

• In addition to the other class requirements, I would like everyone to have e-mail and web access, and check them regularly. If this is a problem with anyone, please see me. I will be posting assignments on the web, and also materials from lecture.

• Course grade guidelines:

  At the end of the semester your scores on individual assignments will be combined into a final course percentage. If your final course percentage is the percentage in the first column below or better, you will get at least the grade in the second column.

Resources

• This class moves very fast and you may not feel that there is enough time to discuss homework. If you have any questions that you would like to ask me about the homework, or anything else (really! anything!) feel free to e-mail me, come to my office hours, or make an appointment to see me at some other time. You should also keep the Learning Center in mind (see next).

• The Learning Center has tutors who can help you with Math 222. They are on duty Monday through Friday, 2nd through 9th hours, and Sunday through Thursday, 7 p.m.-10 p.m., in room L116, the lower level of Logan Library. Late Homework, Attendance, etc.

• Late homeworks: Here is how the late homework rules work. If you give me the homework in class, it is in on time. If you put the homework in my mailbox in the Math department before 5:00 on the due date, it is on time. Do not slide homework under my office door. It will be stepped on, and then marked late, or possibly thrown away. If you put homework in my box late, you might get lucky and I'll count it on time. But you might not. It depends on whether the grader has taken the homework home yet. Any late homeworks submitted by the last day of class I will grade personally, whenever I get around to it. They will receive half credit. You must put your class meeting time on all late homeworks.

• Reading questions may be submitted late for half credit until the last day of class.

• I will not be taking attendance in this class. However, you are responsible for all material missed during absences from class.

• If you know in advance that you are going to have to miss an hour exam or weekly quiz, please let me know in writing as soon as possible, preferably before the second week of classes if you can.

• If you miss an hour exam or weekly quiz for unforeseen reasons, you will need a note from the Dean's office. If you are sick, be warned that you may need to go to the Health Services office in order to get such a note.

• Absences from the final exam need to be handled through the Dean's office.
