Also, some general brainstorming about how each component could be useful was done outside of class." We came up with a team name and it worked well and no one disagreed." "- We talked about how it would be a little bit harder to communicate to the teams far away, but that AOL Instant Messenger is a good workaround for that. (As long as the kids have internet access) - Most of the work I did was theoretical, so I'll get feedback on it once we try to apply the techniques we discussed. - I was working with people from other teams in a brainstorming environment. - I did not know that people found coming to a consensus to be difficult. I've never had a problem with that before, usually either one of two things happens: 1. My idea is better than everyone elses and we agree right away to do that. 2. There several ideas that are pretty good; I never had a problem abandoning my idea for others that have similar degrees of goodness. - I think that it is a good idea to talk to people from different teams (departments, companies, countries) and play your ideas off them as well. I mean, you're not going to lose information from doing that, and you might learn something valuable in the process." "We encounted problems coming up with a team name. Only one person had a name for us, and it was kind of odd, so most other teammates didn't care for it. We didn't come up with other names though, and so we have the one name that was suggested. I talked with people about the project and schools. We talked about distance and communications between schools far away. We didn't really accomplish anything, we just kind of mused about stuff." "For the Jigsaw exercise it was rough getting started for most of the groups. For my group (the camera) we didn't get the materials for a little while. Once we had them we spent the remaining time trying to figure out how to get the camera working. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful, however we did find where the documentation about the camera was located. So at least now we can learn more about the camera on our own time. Team interactions were minimal, as it was mostly us breaking into other groups. I'm not sure when we will meet (if at all) this weekend. Maybe I will send an email out to get a better idea of what the team wants to do." The "team exercise" we did was a bit odd, but it actually worked out pretty well. I was surprised at how it worked to convey a positive spirit. When we finished the jigsaw puzzle exercise, it mostly worked out pretty well. I got a good feeling for what most every piece of equipment does (except "other sensors" - our team member doing that part was absent). I think it worked out pretty well." I also looked more into the proejct the team will be working on for Beyond Botball." "Since there was only one handy-board and one computer to program it on as a group we played around on them getting the motor and buzzer to work. Learning about the devices as a team isn't effective for myself as just sitting down and doing the programming for myself. I really didn't seem to pick up to much. Also the "too many cooks in the kitchen" analogy fit today as we all were telling the person at the computer what to do." Figured out how to make motors spin, the display work and the board to beep. Also, talked with some friends from other groups about the parts they were learing about and groups they were helping with." "Playing around with the board was fun. It was nice to see programming commands make something happen in the real world instead of just computer outputs. Reminds me of the stuff I did with FIRST in high school when we first started playing with the boards, and I didn't really know much about programming back then." Spoke with my teammates about the plan for out robot, talked with some other people in the class about their take on the material we'd learned." "We had some interesting problems with attatching the motor to the main board of the machine and trying to get it to run. After some initial confusion on how exactly the motor command was supposed to be used, we got the motor to run, but couldn't get it to stop. Occasionally it would run corectly the first time, but when we tried to reproduce the results it would seem to revert to whatever it had been doing before. We finally concluded that the board was probably low on power for one reason or another." Later I received emails from the team and was able to update the class summary file. In class we discussed guided visualization thru high school, choose our team name, and practiced with robots. After class I sent out an email asking for information that was written down in class today. I also added one hour because I forgot to take into account when I was completing the surveys for March 6th and 7th. Each of those surveys took about 30 minutes to complete." "March 8th was really the first day we started to work with the software. I thought that it was a good start and a the first real introduction to the robots. I would really like to have more time as a group to start designing a functioning robot. This is something that we will start next week. I was also happy to finally receive emails from the entire group. Our group decided to call ourselves “Rosebots.” I do believe that our group will begin to function more as a team now that we have a better idea of where we are going." We were unable to get the camera to work. I continued reading on the way to program the camera in interactive C." "The first problem we encountered was that there was a broken pin in the camera slot for one of the boards. Secondly the cameras were not even in the room at the start of the class. Third we had to download Interactive C and find the manual on the Camera. After reading a little more on the camera I believe that I am closer to getting it to successfully work, but it will probably still take upwards of 30-60 minutes to finally get the camera to take one picture. (the Irresponsible Robotic Engineers of the New Era/Error) was well received. However, it was rather difficult for those in which the entire team naming process kind of jumped on them without them knowing. Good thing I saw it coming or we might have ended up with a... less than desirable team name. Not much else to report. I did more research into what the specialized functions where for IC and robotics and the relative speeds, rotations, etc where for the individual commands. I'm still trying to figure out for myself how to make some of these robots I will help design and move along to be more of a combat drone than a peace loving, toxic moving, botguy saving machine. Must be the destructive man in me talking. I wonder if a quick flip forklift procedure to work. I figure if the opposing bot cant move or do anything because it isn't on its treads/wheel/etc. we should have more than enough to win the competition. We then began to program one of the chip brains." "We took turns explaining what we'd learned, pausing for questions in between each explanation. Everyone seemed to have a good understanding of all of the concepts by the end of the session, so I'd consider it a success. We also had a group consensus to change our team name to The A-Team."
