We spent a little over two hours with the students there." "- I did not know how to accurately explain how to calibrate the camera to the kids, so I had them take turns doing it themselves as a hands-on activity. - It looked like they understood what we were talking to them about for the most part. We should get some feedback in the next couple of weeks when they ask us questions. - I learned that middle school kids are not as ADD (for lack of a better word) as I thought they would be. This is interesting because I expected that getting them to listen to anything we said would be the hardest part. - I learned that hands-on activities are great for learning how to calibrate things. I'm sure I'll run into situations later on when I'm teaching/learning how to calibrate something (or even activities similar to calibration)." We also gave them some general lessons on the programming and equiptment for the robots. " "It was a long drive out there and back, but I really enjoyed the trip. The teacher there had expressed annterest in having us come out when we first met her, and she was very glad to have us there to help with things. The kids were energetic and very enthusiastic about everything we were teaching them, and I was a little overwhelmed at first by how much needed to be taught to them in such a small amount of time. Despite this, I think we pulled the whole thing off pretty well, and the kids seemed to both enjoy it an learn a lot. Also on Wednesday three of the members of Rosebots and me all went to Lincoln Middle School in Edwardsville, IL to complete a mini demonstration." "All of my day on Wednesday was spent on CSSE 490 activities. After I finished three of the surveys in the morning, I drove to Rose-Hulman to meet the two team members that I would be traveling with. We printed off directions and then started on our trip to Edwardsville, IL. It took about 3 hours until we arrived at Lincoln Middle School. We arrived right on time. We were supposed to meet Kimbrell at the school at 3:00 PM central time. On Tuesday we had saved a bunch of files on her computer so that we could role right through the demonstration. By 3:10 we were beginning to feel that she might not be showing up. Right as we were giving up on her she finally arrived. She apparently had some slightly bad directions. Once she arrived, we started the mini demonstration and everything went great. We explained and demonstrated the software, all the sensors, the motors, and servos. We also had activities that each of the students could participate in. By the end of the meeting we had the students write a short program and test it out. The kids really seamed to have fun. I think the kids are now ready to begin trying out their own ideas and start building their group robot." We also brainstormed possible ideas for the beyond botball, and tried to get an idea of how much we'd want to spend on it." "We had a lot of fun brainstorming crazy ideas for the robot. I think the best one was a minature pirate ship, complete with little leggo pirates, and a separate bot modeled as a life raft to separate from the main ship and block the opposing goal in an effort to be 'rescued'."
