I hope you noticed that I did that very accurately, before. I will put in an average of 2.5 hours per day/weekend, which is the minimum of time I actually spend, including class, class assignments, working with our Botball teams, team communications, several team meetings for Beyond Botball, individual work/thought on Beyond Botball, and possibly other things which I can't think of anymore, right now. I hope that is acceptable for you. Thanks." "" "E191CED870C04D229465A8E9B88BF0AE" "Blackburn, W. Ryan" "blackbwr" "5/4/2006 2:50:13 PM" "2.5 hours" "Worked a little with botball teams. Also filled out some of these surveys, along with contact with group members. Also thought of a research paper topic." "Didn't do a whole lot over the weekend, looks like botball is winding up. We still have a lot to do in beyond botball though and thought of possible topics for paper." "- I encountered no problems. - I'll find out very soon how effective my programming practice was. - I did not work with my team over the weekend. - I learned that most of this should just be a process of abstraction: I just think about what I would need to do if I were the robot and that's the code I need to write. - Abstracting myself and thinking as if I were a different entity should be useful in the future as an aid to understanding." On Saturday three other students and I journeyed to St. Louis to meet with two teams, one in the morning and one in the afternoon." "The team we met with in the morning had things very well under control. One of their people working wiht the students is very knowledgable about LEGOs and programming and he has had great success helping the girls to build very nice robots. Their team should be very successful at the competition. Unfortunately for us, this meant that we weren't really able to do much than watch them work and offer a few suggestions here and there. Though we did learn some neat tricks for building LEGOs and it helped us to better understand the competition itself. The second team we visited with, however, was in trouble in terms of construction. They had gone through many designs and none were able to successfully climb over the pipes. The students had no trouble programming, but they were all very new to building LEGOs and their designs were rather flimsy. We helped them redesign both of their chassis and gave them pointers on structurally sound designs. We were much more productive with this team and felt that we were able to really help them out! I look forward to seeing both teams in a few weeks at the competition! Hopefully our help will have paid off by then." Deagan took apart a piece of the robot that Alex built and she got really upset and cried. I went into another room and talked to her about it and she seemed better. I also talked to my mom this weekend about how to keep this from happening again because she was middle school teacher for many years." "My major concern at this point is that we're simply not going to finish in time for the competition on Saturday. I think we'll be able to put something together, but the problem is just whether it will be any good at this point, particularly with our motor issues. A program is no problem - I think the major issue is when we put it all together into the main robot." He had devised a way to have two hydralics on my extender." "Looking over Sam's design, it wasn't quite finished yet, but it showed that two hydralics could probably fit in the space we needed it to, which was good. We also by this time got the ball basket and the extender fused together in a way so that it actually worked quite well. Sam and I then talked a lot about integration issues. We had our team separated into two groups, one was working on the base and the wheels, the other group had been working on the ball basket and height extension and all that sort of thing, which was the group I was in. Looking at what we ahd, we saw that integration of our parts wasn't really going well, even the ball basket didn't integrate into the height extender that well without a bit of extra engineering, and we're even in the same group. So, we're unsure of how everything is going to come together, but hopefully it will, eventually. I also spent almost an hour filling these survey things out this weekend for the past week, which is a lot more than I've ever done in the past. There was a lot of stuff I actually accomplished this week, I mean, things were actually _built_ for once, so I guess I had a lot more to talk about, this time." "There were some problems today wit ha couple students. One student modified the bot because he didn't like how things looked. This in turn caused some problems with the person who had modified it before. The lesson in this is that there needs to be some rules about the students modifying others work. i.e. They should ask for permission from the person who did the work before or one of the people in charge." When we were leaving we noticed that the car we were driving in was getting really hot so we decided to switch to a different car. I had the only other care so I went back, got my keys, and then I drove instead. Driving wasn't much of a problem, we had to stop and get gas, and made a few stops on the way (coffee, bathroom, etc) Finding the school wasn't that bad either, except mapquest gave us different directions than we got from the schools. The first school we got to want that interesting. They already had most of their stuff done and there wasn't a lot that we could help with. We watched how they did things and learned a bit for ourselves, and made suggestions when we could. Left there a bit before noon, ate lunch at taco bell, and drove to the next school. The second school was more interesting. They were haveing a lot of problems with building their robots with legos. Mostly this was because they weren't building them sturdy enough so the gears wouldnt mesh properly. They were also building by just adding stuff on and didnt have much of an overall design. We helped them with this and they were going pretty good by the end. They offered to take us out for ice cream, so we went to that and then drove back. We stopped once then too, to get more gas."
