"Well, class was fun becuase we started learning about legos. The website though is not the best website, with the navigation bar only appearing in certain browsers, and with the rules being written poorly. I got over that though by just reading a lot." "The exercise seemed to be a pretty good idea. Everyone got to collabroate and bring their knowledge back to their groups. A good way to reinforce the small team, and the whole class as a team as well. An idea like this would be really useful for our own botball groups we are advising." Maybe our team can also think about adapting some of these aspects to our ideas." "F2B8AC605AE94A858E4C332C21EC8ABB" "Blackburn, W. "We split each other up in random order and investigated each aspect of botball, I think this will be sucessful. I learned interesting things about sensors, motors and the camera feature of botball. Future possible implementation of the jig saw activity." "I didn't find any particular problems. It was mostly preliminary learning for the project, so I can feel that I was mostly successfull." "- I was not able to find the botball team assignments on the angel page. I accepted that they probably were not on there and decided to go to the CS lab sometime to find out. - The e-mail I sent out was successful (I sent a copy to myself to make sure it sent). The search for the botball team assignments was not successful because I did not find them. - Aside from the e-mail and the team activity in class we did not do any work together today. - The jig-saw technique is interesting because it seems to be a very inefficient way of learning material. However, it may make up for that deficit in forcing us to learn more about our teammates. - I'll remember the jig-saw if I find myself in a situation where I am leading a team in the workforce." "My team and I worked well together to split up the jobs for the jigsaw today. We did fine being fixers. When we were told to get recorders and what not, we did fine with people getting jobs. Talking with people today about the competition was interesting. I found out some stuff I hadn't understood from reading the rules last night." "I was introduced to another team building exercise which consisted of trying to creatively match questions with answers. For myself, it was rather easy to find someone who had a canned answer that fit right along with my question, but the mingling was probably the most beneficial part of the activity. Clearly such exercises needs to have some bit of humor to make them enjoyable and thus productive." We then began another exercise called Jigsaw." "We seemed a little pressed for time. My thoughts about Jigsaw were that it wasn't as useful for some of the groups since there were only a limited number of instructors, so a lot of people (myself included) were sitting around wondering what to do. How successful we were will be determined later, when our group tries to teach each other about the different subsystems." "A minor problem was deciding which team member would learn about which concept / type of equipment. Since nobody expressed any preference, we simply went by the order in which we were seated. I learned about the cross-bracing - it's relatively simple, and a good way to make a set of blocks structurally sound. The jigsaw-puzzle method of learning concepts was pretty simple and didn't involve too much time - as long as there are enough experts to go around, I think it works well." I was looking at the sensors and concidering what needed to be convaided about them to the rest of my group." "There's not much to discuss here as of yet. The only important thing to still be learned about the sensors is how well they work and their level of sensativity, other than that the rest is yet to come." "Once again I learned about an interesting technique for introducing teamwork and teams, the poser/answer game. It was good that it forces people to interact and have some fun while doing it. Since each person on the team was to go one of the introductions to a portion of the robot building, I volunteered to go to the motor/servo demo. This technique worked well." "In class, we needed to decide who learned about what aspect of the botball. We chose this by having people call out what they wanted. I had no preference, so I got other sensors, when the others called out all the other aspects." After class I returned home and continued exploration on the BotBall website and with IC." "I believe that todays session and the work I did at home were beneficial. I know more about BotBall and Interactive C. Although we had difficulty during the class session with IC, I am confident that we will get it resolved on Thursday's session so we can teach our group IC. Team E is working together very well. We can quickly make decisions about division of labor and the team seems to be working very well." Also, spent some time outside of class to read a little more on beyond botball." "When attempting to connect the computer to our board thing to use with our robot we had to find some connector parts. After we found everything and connected them, we still could not establish a connection between the two, even though we had "ON" lights confirming that they were indeed connected. In the end class ended before we could establish a connection." Also spent time reading about Interactive C online." "There were a few problems working on the programming in class. We were unable to get the computer to recognize the device attatched to it, and while we were fairly certain we had all of the right connecters for the device, there really wasn't any way to tell if they were correct or not. I downloaded the program to my own laptop, but since I don't have a device of my own there wasn't really any way to read the help manual, although I did spend a little time exploring the program." There were some things that were not established during the class period so I simply sent out an email to help get everybody on the same page. I got a response from two of the members as of today and hope to communicate with the other three by the end of the day. The in-class exercises on Tuesday were interesting. The jigsaw exercise will be a good method to use when teaching our schools how to use the botball equipment." "Today it was interesting to see the different team building exercises. The problem/solution team building exercise appears that it would be very difficult to do in groups that are not very big. For this reason, I believe it is impractical for us to use it with the Botball teams, however, it was very interesting for our class. I also learned about the camera, which may have many useful applications. If there is a task of finding botguy, then it will be almost necessary. For beyond botball I believe it will be necessary, due to the nature of the task set before us. Although I now understand applications of the camera, I have still not used one in practice, but that should come on Thursday." "Being the CS major that I am and the love for all things robotic, having a programming language directly tailored to the manipulation and AI of robots, I have to say, I am incredibly interested in IC. The download and installation of the software was easy enough, seeing that it was free of charge and actually contained with it an instruction manual that easy to understand. Next, all I did was fiddle around with the program to see what I can do now with no proper equipment hooked up to the machine, and briefly skimmed a few documents that outlined what IC was and all the "new" commands and jargon there was for it. After messing around with IC, I remembered to upload my piece of the team building exercises." Then I went and downloaded that interactive C program, got it set up on my computer, and played around with it for the rest of the time." "I really should either find my "The C Programming Language" or go out and buy a new one. That book is going to be an invaluable reference for this project, both for our team, and for the teams we're coaching should they decide to work in C. I'm begining to wonder what the rest of the team is doing. I know this is the first week and that things are always relatively slow at the start of a class, but it doesn't make me any less uneasy. We've got a lot to do and not a whole lot of time to do it in. I should probably figure out some way for me to organize with the rest of the group (since I'm the only one not living on campus). That would probably help fix the situation and make me less uneasy." In addition, I began to learn the programming for the botball robots." "Our group of programmers had problems getting the box to connect to the port on the computer. However, I learned a little bit of the programming language, and it is very similar to C. This will make it easier to explain to my group when we put our jigsaw back together."
