I learned lots about the new botball controlls and computers. I have been thinking that I would like to try and use alot of onlien communication with the teams assigned to us. "- I really thought I didn't know enough about robotics to be of any help, but I found out that most people just needed help with C. - I feel alot more comfortable about robotics now, so I think that I was successful in that regard. - We worked individually for this event, or at least I assumed that was my job, we don't really have a command structure. - I'll reiterate here that I learned that I do know enough to help these people, which is something that I seriously doubted before this weekend. - I found the speaker's explaination of programming for people who have never programmed before to be something I should remember how to do. It was nice to have a review of what the teams would be working on before trying to help them out. When the teams started doing the challenges, I went around and introduced myself to the three teams I'm to help out. I gave them all my contact info. Ladue was really neat because it was an all girl school. They seemed very happy to have a female helping them out and I was told they tend to bash guys alot. De La Salle seemed to do fine on the programming and had more trouble with the building and hardware parts of the bot. They were also interesting and were interested in whether I had a job when I graduate. International was neat because they all spoke French. They seemed to have a good sense of what they were doing, so I didn't hang around them too much. "During the workshop, it was difficult to identify our teams and so I spent most of the morning just floating helping anyone who caught my attention. I found it difficult to make a good first impression with a mentor when I had no clue who those 4 people in a sea of 20. Once the evening social time came, it was almost too late to be trying to make conversation since they were all eager to go to dinner. If I learned anything, if I was responsible for arranging such a workshop in which team members are to become attached to teams, then I would make that the first thing that happens in the morning. I would require at least one person from every student team be available to greet those mentors and then be able to pass the torch to other student team members as the day went on. In this way, the first day would become a viable time to get to know the correct mentors and to develop a repoire which could help sustain further communication." As much as it was a learning experience for them, I also learned a lot about how to program in IC and how to use the vision system well. It also gave me a good idea for the level of experience among teams, as well as they're willingness to work with us. I look forward to hearing about other teams' experiences this weekend." My group was able to meet with the teacher from Lincoln Middle School from Edwardsville, IL. She seemed very nervous. We gave her a few ideas about how to get her students interested and how to begin her first meeting. We suggested that she download and watch the video that we watched on the first day of class. We thought that this would be a good way to introduce what they could expect from botball. We got here contact information and are planning on sending here an email that contains all of our contact information. We let her know that we are more than willing to help her team move along. By the time we got done talking to her she seemed a little less uneasy. I didn’t get a chance to meet our other two teams. I will be able to meet with Woodrow Wilson on Tuesday and will send out an email to Honey Creek Middle School this week. Hopefully we will be able to help each of our teams get ready for the competition. "I worked almost exclusively with one of the rookie middle school teams (Goshen). I meet two of the other schools, and one school left early. I found out a lot of valuable information from the teams. One team (Edwardsville High School) essentially told me that they were not really interested in our help. That school also told me they were going to help Liberty middle school with the technical portion of their learning. I believe Goshen will the main team my group is working with, because, since they are new, they are very open to all the team building activities I had talked about. They also have no one who knows programming so they will need our assistance with that technical portion. The conference went really well. I learned a significant amount of information through the slide show. I believe that the Goshen advisor found me very helpful when trying to program a few things, since I have had some experience in C++. I introduced myself to several groups and set myself up in a position where I can help each team to the best of my abilities. A lot of C instruction was handled during the workshop where I got to show off my coding skills. However, it seems a little odd that some of the teachers from the groups were asking questions about radio transmission and electromagnetic interference. Something a little bit out of my knowledge, but I guessed to the best of my knowledge. I met with the International School of Indiana and I will have to say that I will probably enjoy working with this group the most. They seem like a enjoyable lot of people (although when they break out into French, I can't help but wonder if they are talking about me). Most of their problems stem from lack of programming knowledge so it seems that I will be providing alot of my services to them. Ladue is one that I'm sure that Meg will enjoy being with. An all girls middle school team that runs on Machintosh computers. The girls seemed to have gotten a good grasp on the programming aspect of robotics, even though their teachers are completely clueless as what to do. I also handed them contact information and got to know a little about them. De La Salle I am hoping that the team proves to be much more... friendly? than the teacher counterparts. It was obvious by talking with them that they knew quite a bit about programming (or at least the logic following how to handle a top level programming language) and after a few questions deemed upon themselves to figure me as either "stupid" or "unhelpful" in what they were trying to do. I cannot blame them too much, most of my knowledge is in programming, and if they know that, there is little more I can help with other than answers to very generic questions. Once again, I swapped contact information and I wonder if I will ever hear from them again. Definately a bad first impression. As it turned out, I happened to take my lunch break and the exact same time as the botball workshop did. So again, I introduced myself to some of the other teams, meet up and chatted with the teams that I was assigned with, and went on my merry way. On Sunday, as chance again would have it, the International team emailed me to make sure they had recieved the right email address. Thus, I responded and at least a good connection with one team has been reached. The least I could ever ask for. "Many of the teams were much more prepared than I had expected them to be. This wasn't a problem per se, but it did catch me off gaurd. I guess pessimism has its drawbacks. In general, a little bit of courtesy seems to go a long way. Call someone sir or mam and they begin to be a lot more personable towards you. I had also always assumed that I didn't understand that much about programming or perhaps that it was simple because thats how it feels to me. Turns out, this isn't the case. Lots of people see programming as an impeneratrable fog which they will never understand, and that I can accidentally come off as some stately lord from the realm of Programmia. I really need to keep in mind that many of the things I feel are self-evident about programming only seem that way because I've been doing this stuff for years."
