  1. Please complete the course evaluation form this week.
  2. Check the gradebook to make sure that you got credit for everything you should get credit for.
  3. I asked the graders to try hard to finish grading HW15 today.
  4. No class meeting tomorrow
  5. Based on a student request, I added a page to the Definitions and Formulas page that I will give you with the final exam. It's still linked from the schedule page.
  6. Fifteen students submitted all assignments a day early and ended the course with 20 late days.
  7. Senior final tomorrow:
    1. 219 points, but 200 will count as a perfect score. Then scaled to 166.
    2. 84 points: T/F/IDK
    3. 60 points: Clasify languages as R, CF, D, SD, NSD
    4. 75 points: 5 "essay" problems. 4 of those involve TMs in some way. 3 involve undecidability.
  8. Tuesday's exam will be similar, but there will be more of each of the three kinds of problems.

    1. Added to Exams category.
    2. Exams count 80%, so 1.25% exam points = 1% overall course average.
    3. There are 532 possible exam points.
    4. 532*.0125 = 6.65 exam points for each "late days earned point".
    5. Complete formla: =round(round((1+LateDayTotal)/3,0)*6.65,0)
    6. The inner "round" is described in the course syllabus.

    1. Problem 2 Choose the correct language classification for each language described below.
        F means finite
        R means regular but not finite,
        CF means context-free but not regular,
        NCF means not context-free.
      Correct answer: 3 points, IDK: 1 point, incorrect or blank: 0 points.
    2. Problems 3-11 Do seven of the nine 11-point problems. Leave two problems blank, or write SKIP in big letters. If you attempt more than seven problems, the first seven that you attempt will be graded, unless you write SKIP.
  2. Points on exam:

    1. Two of them are difficult and their solutions are long.
    2. You should begin thinking about them soon after the exam.

  1. No students told me about accommodations for the exam, so I am assuming that everyone will take it during the regular class time on Tuesday.

  1. HW2 due today at 11:55 PM, HW3 Thursday, HW4 Monday at 5 PM.
    No late days may be used for HW4
  2. Exam 1 will be in class on Tuesday, Mar 20. Closed book and notes.

  3. For HW2, you do not have to use the "state diagram" notation for PDA's;
    high-level English descriptions are fine;
    mainly you need CSSE220/230-level knowledge of stacks in order to do problems 3.5 and 3.6.
  4. You do not need to worry much about details from Sections 3.3 and 3.4;
    they give a quick overview of the major topics of the course;
    we will do all of these things in detail when we get to the appropriate chapters.

  2. Extra credit opportunity: Contribute to a glossary of terms and definitions. Google sheet is linked from Day 4 in the Schedule page's HW column.

Session 1

  1. Many of the usual "start of course" topics will happen Day 02; today we introduce Deterministic Finite State Machines (DFSM) instead.
  2. Optional Q&A session over review material: Tuesday at 4:20 in G310
  3. Reading quiz 1 is due now; quiz 2 due tomorrow or Wednesday.
  4. After this, reading quizzes will be infrequent; not necessarily announced in advance
  5. HW0 is over some background material. No problems to turn in, but take a serious look at them soon.
  6. HW1 due Thursday at 11:55 PM, HW2 Monday at 11:55 PM. HW will usually be due on Mondays aand Thursdays.
  7. Exams will on days 10, 19, 30. Closed book and notes. Final exam whenever the registrar schedules it; don't miss it!
  8. Read the Syllabus before tomorrow's class and bring questions to class.
