subst-leftmost-cps
test case during my office hours only if no other students are waiting for help on something else.
Strategy: Make test cases that use VERY simple s-lists; gradually make them more complex until you have the simplest one for which your error appears. Then start tracing.

- The "grace day" (due to the break) for A13 means that you can submit on Wednesday without using one of your late days.
It does not mean that the due date is Wednesday.
You cannot submit it on Thursday.
You should try to get it done by Tuesday, to leave plenty of time for A14 and A15.
- For each interpreter milestone, there is a Participation Survey on Moodle, where you will describe
your participation and your partner's.

- I changed the due date for A11a to Thursday, due to the Career Fair.

- The usual TA hours today and Sunday (see the schedule page, Day 1).
- Percopo Tutor Joanna Garrett in Percopo 317 8:00-11:00 PM
Session 13
- I don't make appointments for my office hours times. Just come to my office.
- Think about (and talk with other students about) an interpreter project partner (groups of 2).
- Generally I will let you choose your partner, if you and the other student agree.
- Your partner must be in the same class section as you.
- Mutually-agreed partnerships almost always work better than ones that I choose. So don't be shy!
- Students who don't find their own partners and only list one or two preferences are much more likely to end up with an undesirable partner.
- Should be someone whose 304 understanding and programming ability closely matches yours.
- Also a good idea to choose someone whose late days history, favorite working hours and commitment to the project are similar to yours.
- "best friend" or fraternity bro/sis" partners sometimes do more to damage friendships than to help the 304 learning.
- I may veto a partnership if the difference between your exam scores is more than 20% of the total. This is not automatic.
- Partner preference survey (on Moodle) is due Monday at Noon.
- Survey is available on Moodle (probably sometime Wednesday).
- I will announce partners no later than end of the day Tuesday, Oct 2.
- If your Exam 1 score is low, I will do my best to pair you with someone else in the same situation, so that neither of you is an anchor for the other.
- If your exam score is REALLY low, and you did not find a "mutually agreed" partner, I may say that I cannot in good conscience burden another student with being yoked to you.
- If after Exam 1 you are considering dropping the course, please try to decide whether to stick with it and tell me your decision before the survey is due.
- A1-A8 were mainly about learning Scheme, going deeper with recursive programming, and getting used to using first-class procedures.
- Beginning with A9, the programs you write will often be more abstract, higher-level, and/or more focused on language properties.
- Weeks 1-3 are the warm-up phase (mostly easy), 4-7 are the main emphasis of the course (a little bit harder), 8-10 focus on continuations (fascinating and very difficult)
- In my office today: 1:00-3:50.
- TAs in F217 today: 2:00-4:50, 7:00-10:00
- Tommy McMichen in Percopo 223 8:00-9:30

- Exam 1 written: non-coding questions (3, 12 points)
coding problems (4 or 5, 28 points).
Each coding problem has a short solution. Some are HW problems.
I suggest that you spend no more than 50 minutes on the written part.
- Exam 1 computer: (4 or 5 coding problems, 40 points)
In most cases, your score will be the points that the grading server gives you.
I strongly suggest that you leave yourself at least 90 minutes for this part.

Session 8
- Today you may want to do the live-coding session on your computer.
There is a lot of starting code, and I'll do a lot of copying and pasting.
- Only 29 students finished A6b early. There is a reason for that!
- At the beginning of the course, I said, "Assignments will
start out easy and ramp up quickly."
A6b is the beginning of the steepest part of the ramp-up.
- In my office today: 1:00-2:55.

A6b has 5 problems. Three of them are short and straighforward.

works on your computer?"
- In my office today: 12:05-2:55.

- Both partners must submit the form.
- Late this afternoon I'll send an email saying who can switch.

- If I can't accommodate everyone, I'll give priority to earlier submissions.
- If I approve your switch, bring me Add/Drop forms today or Tuesday.
