Two students who dropped out in week 7 but didn't officially drop the course are not included in those totals.
- A19 suggestion: First convert to CPS with data structures, then to imperative form.
- A19 suggestion: Start today. Chances are good that you can finish tomorrow and earn another late day.
- Leave yourself a day for debugging! Use something like my trace-it procedure.

- We will do course evals during Tuesday's class meeting time: please bring your computer.
- In my office today: Hours 5 and 9.
- TA hours in F217: Periods 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM.
Connor in Lakeside 120: 9:00-10:30.
Session 34
- A17 Participation survey is due tomorrow.
- Have you done the cps-DS practice problem yet?
- Not required, but a good idea to do it before beginning A18.
- It's under Day 32 in the Live-in-class folder.
- In my office today: Hours 5 and 9.
- TAs in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM
Session 33
- A17 is due today.
- A18 timing suggestions:
- Write your interpreter code in CPS by the end of Wednesday.
- Debug it Thursday and Friday (you may need 2 days for that!).
- Then add call/cc and exit-list (you'll probably discover more CPS bugs then).
- A19 has been updated for this term. It is an individual assignment.
- A student who is taking PLC next term is looking to hire a tutor (for pay).
- I asked any of the TAs who are available to be in the F-217 lab this evening.
- I have infusions next week on Monday and Wednesday.
Since I'll not be here Monday afternoon, I will have "office hours" in G308 hours 2-4. In my office today: Hours 5-7.
- Today I'm giving priority to students who are working on reference parameters.
The TA's will have a harder time helping with ref params than with set!
and define
.
I'll help with anything, but if there are students waiting for me who are working on ref params,
I will help them first.
- TAs in F-217: hours 8-10 and 7:00-11:00 PM.
Session 32
- We'll be using the starting code file from Live-in-class/day32 in today's live coding.
- I added new reference parameter test case for A17.
- In my office today: Hours 5, 6, 9.
- TA hours in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM
Session 31
- To be on-track for A17, you should have
set!
and define
working by now.
- In my office today: hours 5, 6, 10.
- TA hours in F217: 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM, plus Connor in Lakeside 9:00-10:30 this evening.
Session 30
- New assignment due dates. Schedule page updates will reflect this soon (tomorrow?)

- TAs in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM.
Session 29
- A16 is due today.
Complete the A16 participation survey by the end of Tuesday.
- The first three interpreter assignments are straightforward (although 16 can be tricky to debug).
A17 is a big step up in difficulty. Three main parts:
- Add
set!
and define
.
- Add "pass-by-reference" parameters.
- Use lexical address for variable lookup
I recommend that you plan to complete one part Tuesday, one Wednesday, and one Thursday,
leaving yourself an extra day in case you get stuck on one part. Each part can be done by adding or changing a small number of lines of code,
but figuring out what to do and debugging it can be tricky.
- E2 scores after adjustments for several students: Mean 78%, median 80%.
- In my office today: Hours 5-7, last part of 8.
- TAs in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM.
Session 28
- No class meeting today
Session 27
- If you have questions about the grading of your exam, please come to my office today or tomorrow.
- A15 is due tomorrow. A16 Monday.
If you have not already done a few of the CPS problems, don't wait until this evening to start!
- Suggestion: Have another student (not me) look over your solutions to make sure that they really are in tail form.
- Don't forget to leave some time for answering the efficiency question in the memoize problem.
- A16: Have you and your partner decided how you will represent recursive environments?
- Tracing your A16 code when debugging:
This should convince you that you do NOT want your first local environment to extend the global env.
If you come to me for help and still have that, I will send you away to fix that and then come back for help.
- In my office today: Hours 5, 6, 9. TOMORROW: 5 and 6 only.
- The usual TA hours in F217, plus Connor in Lakeside 9:00-10:30 this evening.
Session 26
- Exam rooms: G310 (A-G), G315 (H-P), G317 (S-Z)
- Don't forget to bring your interpreter printout: See Day 25 announcements.

Session 25
- A14 participation survey (on Moodle) is due today.
- Optional Exam 2 review session tonight 8:00-10:00 PM, O-159
- I emailed the instructions for the various parts of Exam 2.
- Bring a printout of your A14 code (working or not) to the exam.
- Print it 2-sided and staple it.
- Write a page number at the bottom each page
- Write your name and your partner's name at the top of the first page.
- Give it to the instructor/TA in your classroom before the exam starts.
- You can retrieve it when you submit part 1 of the exam.
- Submit it with part 2
- Exam rooms: G310 (A-G), G315 (H-P), G317 (S-Z)
- Reminder: in the next 7 days you have a large individual assignment (15) and a small team assignment (16) due. Begin work on both soon.
- In my office today: Hours 5-8 (I have advising appointments 12:20-1:10)
Session 24
- See my Piazza posts about A14.
- About 70% of the time between the due date for A13 and the due date for A14 has passed.
Are you at least somewhere near 50% done?
- Bring a printout of your A14 code (preferably 2-sided) to next Tuesday's exam.
You will be asked to add some code during the closed-book portion of the exam.
- Also, at least one problem on the computer part of the exam requires you to begin with your (mostly) working A14 interpreter and add a feature to the interpreted language.
If you don't get A14 working in time to get credit, you still need to get it working before the exam.
- In my office today: Hours 6-8. (I have some advising appointments, mainly beginning of 8th)
- TA hours in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM.
- Office hours Wednesday: 4, 5, 7.
Session 23
- A13 is not included in your CSSE3 04 midterm grade.
31 out of 50 students have A for their midterm grade.
7 out of 50 have less than B.
- A13 participation survey (on Moodle) is due today
- Three students have earned a late day for every assignment and now have 17.
- Exam 2 E&C problem happens during class time tomorrow.
- A15 is a challenging individual assignment does not depend on A13 or A14.
- We have discussed everything that is necessary to do problems 2 and 3.
By the end of today's class, you should have seen enough CPS examples to be able
to do most or all of A15 problem 1.
- In my office today: hours 5, 6, 7, 9 (some advising appointments, including 12:00-1:10)
- TA hours in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00PM-11:00 PM.
Session 22
- In my office today: Hours 5, 6, 9
- I have some advising appointments, mainly during 5th hour.
- TA hours in F-217: hours 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM
Session 21
- E&C part of Exam 2 will happen during Tuesday's class. Same format as A12.
- I added two more old Exam 2's to the web pages, and I consolidated all of them into one Exam2 folder, so now there is just one link in the Day 26 Resources column.
- I updated the Exam 2 requirements document for this term. It is also linked from Day 26 of the schedule page.
- For each interpreter milestone there is a required participation survey on Moodle that asks about each team member's participation in and understanding of the code that your team submits.
- The A13 survey is due Monday.
- Only one partner needs to submit A13 to the server. Include your partner's username when you submit.
Only if your partner actually worked with you.
- If you are having "partner cooperation" issues, please let me know sooner instead of later.
- My office hours today: 5, 6, 9.
- Lots of TA hours, as usual on Thursdays
Session 20
- Due to homecoming, the late day deadline for A13 will be Sunday evening, not Saturday evening.
- I should have an SVN repository for each team by the end of the day.
- In my office today: Hours 5,6
Tomorrow (at my house): hours 3, 4, 7, 8. (hopefully on-campus): 9,10
Session 19
- Submit your A12 paper now
- A11b is due tomorrow, A13 Friday
- My "office hours" today: 1:00-5:00, 421 Bluebird Lane.
- The usual TA hours + Connor this afternoon and evening.
Session 18
- Final exam is Wednesday evening, Nov 14.
Check your exam schedule and let me know by Tuesday, Oct 7 if you have a conflict.
- A11b is large. If you have not started yet, be sure to get some of it done very soon.
- Suggestion: Work on A12 this afternoon while the class examples are fresh in your mind.
- Reminder: I will only be able to respond to email and piazza occasionally between 3:00 PM today and 8:00 PM Sunday
- The 304 TAs and Connor Boyle should be available for their regular Friday and Sunday hours
- In my office today: hours 5 and 6.
Session 17
- A12 is due Monday at the beginning of class.
- You can do it alone or with your project partner.
- If you do it together, submit one paper with both names
- No late days may be used or earned for this assignment.
- Next week on Monday and Wednesday I will be off-campus for IVIG infusions
- Monday I will need to leave soon after my last class is over (probably immediately after class is over)
- Wednesday I will probably only be here after 3:30. I'll let you know if that changes.
- You are welcome to come to my house for "office hours". It's about a 5-minute walk from Percopo or Lakeside.
- My office hours today and tomorrow: Hours 5-6.
- For the TA hours, follow the link in the HW section of Day 1 on the schedule page.
Session 16
- CSSE department picnic. Tomorrow 11:30-2:30. Cook Stadium.
Sponsored by DMI. They'd love to talk with students about
potential employment, and they invite you to bring your resumé.
- This weekend I will be traveling, so I will not be able to respond to email or Piazza very often.
Another good reason to start A11b early!
- You probably notice that the course material has gotten harder. It's not just Scheme now, but also some more profound concepts.
It's just as important to work on this course almost every day as it was during Scheme-athon.
- In my office today: Hours 5,6, 9,10. Tomorrow 4, 7, 8.
- Assistant hours in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM.
Session 15
- Partner preference survey due at noon today
- Last warning about A10: It is a large and non-trivial assignment.
If you have not started, you will most likely use a late day.
If you don't start early today, you will most likely not finish.
- A11a is due Wednesday, A12 next Monday.
A11b (due next Tuesday) is another very long assignment.
After doing A10, A11b should not hard, but there are a lot of detail.
I suggest that you get all of the code written in time to leave yourself a couple of days for debugging.
- Office hours today: 5, 6, 4:00-5:00.
I'll be in my office hours 7 and 9, but not available to talk with students.
TAs in F217: class hours 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM

Session 14
- A10 is due Monday (it's big!), A11a due Wednesday
- I. my office today: hours 5-8
- TAs in F217: hours 8-10, 7:30-10:00 PM
Session 13
- You should read the announcements while I hand out exams
- Complete the partner preference form by Monday at noon.
- There is a link on Day 1 of the schedule page called
"What if the grading server gives zero points when the code passes the offline tests?"
- The TA's help me grade, but I am the final authority on grades.
If you think there is a mistake in grading your work, let's talk about it in my office.
- The class average for Exam 2 in this course is typically lower than the average for exam 1.
But usually a few students do better on Exam 2.
Can you be one of them?
- A9 is due today, A10 Monday. A11a Wednesday.
A10 and A11b are substantial assignments.
- Interpreter partner survey is due Monday at noon.
I decided not to "undo" any mutual partner choices.
- In my office today: Hours 5, 6, and 9 (Convo schedule!)
- TAs in F217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM. Connor in Lakeside 120: 9:00-10:30.
Session 12
- Think about (and talk with other students about) an interpreter project partner (groups of 2).
- Generally I will let you choose your partner, if you and the other student agree.
- Your partner does not have to be in the same class section as you.
- Mutually-agreed partnerships almost always work better than ones that I choose. So don't be shy!
- Students who don't find their own partners and only list one or two preferences are much more likely to end up with an undesiable partner.
- Should be someone whose 304 understanding and programming ability closely matches yours.
- Also a good idea to choose someone whose late days history, favorite working hours and commitment to the project are similar to yours.
- I may veto a partnership if the difference between your exam scores is more than 20% of the total.
- Partner preference survey (on Moodle) is due next Monday at noon.
- Survey will be available for you to complete after we post exam scores to Moodle.
- I will announce partners by Thursday, September 27.
- If your Exam 1 score is low, I will do my best to pair you with someone else in the same situation, so that neither of you is an anchor for the other.
- If you are considering dropping the course after Exam 1, please try to decide whether to stick with it before the survey is due.
- Convocation schedule Thursday. 304 classes: 8:50, 9:35, and 10:20.
- Office hours today: 5, 6 and maybe 10.
Session 11
- Optional review session tonight 8:00-10:00 in O159
- Exam parts:
Written: 5 problems, 30 points
Computer: 5 problems, 50 points - Exam rooms:
G310 (Last name Abernathy - Glave)
G315 (Grayless - Phillips)
G317(Sadler - Zheng)
- You may not use mutation for subst-leftmost. Regardless of the grade the
server gives you, code with mutation will get 0 points after a "by-hand" check.
- Reminder: no late days may be used for A8.
27 students submitted early and earned full credit.
- In my office today: hours 5-7.
Assistants in F217: class hours 8-10, 7:00-10:00 PM

Session 9
- Convocation schedule next Thursday. 304 classes meet at 8:50, 9:35, and 10:20.
- At the beginning of the course, I said, "Assignments will start out easy and ramp up quickly."
A7 is the beginning of the steep ramp-up.
- 39/53 students have HW averages of at least 99%. 46/53 at least 94%.
Don't let A7 or the exam spoil that!
- In my office today: Hours 5, 6, 9
- TA hours in F-217: periods 8-10, 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
- Connor Boyle in Lakeside 120: 9:00 - 10:30 PM
Session 8
- Reminder: A7 is long and difficult. Start today if you can.
- A8 is not long, but it is difficult. Start on Friday if you can.
- Due to the exam, no late day may be used for A8. You can still earn a late day!
- In my office today: 11:45-12:30, period 9
- Assistant hours in F-217: Hours 8-10, 7:00-11:00 PM.
- Optional exam review session: Monday 8:00-10:00 PM in O159.

Perhaps you can join them for A6b!
- I have updated the documents and off-line test cases for assignments through #12.
- Also updated due dates for all remaining assignments.
It is possible that an assignment might be delayed,
but I do not expect to move any assignments to an earlier date than what the schedule page says now.
