Math 65S Student Survey: Some student repsonses

Note: I probably didn't include an answer from everyone here, but I hope that this is a sample reflecting everyone's opinions, compiled without bias on my part (as much as possible). Please don't be offended if I didn't include your answer here, it probably just means I randomly came across a similar answer first! --Josh

Opinions

1.
You should be able to copy any picture or music that you find on the Internet.
Strongly Agree: The Internet is a medium for sharing information of all types. If a person does not want to share a file with others, s/he should not post it on the Internet in the first place.

Neutral: Music -- if you already own it on CD -- yes, or if you are listening to a stream. Pictures -- yes, for personal use.

Generally No: Copyright should have limited protection on the net.

Strongly Disagree: This could ruin intellectual property rights.

Strongly Disagree: I believe that intellectual property should be afforded the same protections as physical property.

2.
Suitable government authorities should be able to have access to your e-mail.

Strongly Disagree: What constitutes a suitable monitor? Who's going to monitor the monitors, who's going to monitor the monitors of the monitors, etc.

Generally No: Could be important for national security.

Strongly Agree: I have nothing to hide from the government so I do not care if these authorities have access to me email. Anyone who does have something to hide needs to be monitored in case he/she might inflict hard onto others.

3.
Personal financial and medical information should be totally secure from every inquiry.
Strongly Agree: This type of information is very personal. No one should be able to see it, or give it out except that individual because biases can then be made against that person. Or, you don't want people to use records to steal from someone.

Generally Yes: It depends on who makes the inquiry. Medical or law personnel may need such information in some circumstances.

Generally No: Some access might be needed to combat fraud.

Strongly Disagree: They should be available in certain legal proceedings.

4.
Math is needed to build rockets. In order to make decisions about business or government policy, most people don't need to know very much math or even very much about what math can do.

Strongly Agree: You need relatively little math to get by, or even to make important decisions.

Neutral: I don't think calculus is important in everyday life, but math such as geometry and statistics and math the is more practical, is very important in everyday life.

Neutral: Other people will always know.

Strongly Disagree: Math is the universal language -- and an art as much as a science. Appreciation of the beauty of math is as vital as for beauty of arts and literatures.

Strongly Disagree: Logic is a part of math, and no decision should be made without being thought through logically or without the consequences determined and weighed logically. The decision-make does not need to know he is applying.
