BACCII

The movie, Star Wars, was released in 1977. In Star Wars, a robot named C-3PO knew a computer language named Bachi. Luke's uncle Owen bought C-3PO because this robot knew Bachi. There is a real computer language named BACCII. It has a different spelling but sounds the same. It was developed at Texas Tech University. It was created in 1992. It was designed to teach generic programming concepts using pictures (icons). It won the 1st Place Award from the Association for Computing Machinery in 1994 in the Student Research Competition. It also has a connection to Star Wars. Ben Calloni developed the real computer language, BACCII. He was a graduate student at Texas Tech University from 1986 to 1997. He earned his MS degree in Computer Science first. He then completed his PhD. When Star Wars was released, Ben was a fighter pilot in the Air Force. His fellow pilots nicknamed him Obi-wan. Ben Calloni sounds like Ben (Obi-wan) Kenobi the movie character. The real Obi-wan, Ben Calloni, retired from the Air Force and started his graduate work. He worked with a professor named Dr. Don Bagert. Dr. Bagert is the first registered Professional Software Engineer in the United States. Ben and Don worked together to develop BACCII. Dr. Ben Calloni now works at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a Specialist Senior in Software Methods and Architecture in the Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems. It is logical for the real Obi-wan to now help design fighter aircraft.
