Homework is not collected. Instead, a daily quiz is given over the previous day's assignment. So on Tuesday March 4, 2008 there will be a quiz over the assignment for Monday March 3. Occasional worksheets will be collected and graded.
Homework/worksheets will count 125 points, 3 exams 300 points, lab 100 points, final exam 200.
In the table below, TU stands for Test Your Understanding questions at the end of most sections.They are answered fairly fully at the back of the chapter. Try the question first, then check the back of the chapter if you need to.
Q27.7 stands for Question 27.7, not problem or exercise.

Problem MJM1.

In Excel, set up the formula (p. 1007) for the magnetic field on the axis of a circular current loop
Fill A10..A80 with values 0.10 through 0.80 [these are x values]
Place the loop at x=0.40 (corresponding to cell A40)
Let mu_o I/(4 Pi) = 1, and the loop radius be 0.40 m.
Fill in cells B10..B80 with the formula from p. 1007
Make a graph of the columns you have filled in. It reach a max at x=0.4, and be symmetrically decreasing on either side

Problem MJM2

Add to MJM1 to put a second coil of the same radius in at x=0.70 m
Put the formula B for for this coil in C10..C80
Fill D10..D80 by adding columns B and C together. This is the total field due to both loops.
Adjust the location of the second loop to achieve a constant field halfway between the loops.
This should be when the loops are separated by half the radius. (See problem 28.67)
You can adjust the second loop position with a slider (scroll bar) if you wish.

Go to View, then Toolbars, then click Forms. A skinny menu will show up
Click on the scrollbar item. Don't try to drag it, just move to a free spot.
Then drag horizontally or vertically to create the scroll bar.
Now right click the scroll bar.

You can attach the scroll bar to a cell containing the location of the 2nd loop
You can set the max and min values of the scroll bar
You are ready to roll. Now dragging on the scroll bar will change the cell and the graph will automatically follow!

Problem MJM3

Flash Gordon is lounging around in a rocket at rest with respect to Earth, 9x10^9 m from Earth. Rockets R1 and R2 are travelling at the same speed in a direction such that each will pass Earth, and then later pass Flash. When the lead Rocket R1 passes Earth, clocks are set to zero. After 1 minute on Earth clocks, R2 passes Earth. At 1 minute after zero, rocket R1 passes Flash.
a) What time does R2's clock read when it passes Earth. (R1 and R2 clocks are synchronized.)
b) What time does R1's clock read when it passes Flash? (Flash's clocks are synchronized with Earth's)
