Tall Shepherds Hook

Perhaps not the most glamarous project, but challenging from a forging perspective. The hook started out as a 7' long 5/8" round piece of mild steel. It ended up as an 8' piece in which the bottom was drawn on a length of about 10" and then top was drawn on a length of about 4'. My wife asked me for a tall hook to make it more challenging for the racoons to get at the hummingbird feeder, which they regularly destroyed.

I used my power-hammer to do draw out both sides. Due to the small size of my shop, there was limited space between the power-hammer and the wall. Another challenge was to remove some imperfections on the anvil. This was hard to do with such a long piece and limited arm length. I ended up using an angle grinder to smoothen out some of the forging marks, but left most of them. I did not paint or clear coat the hook as I wanted a nice rust patina to develop on the sanded portions. The rust started to develop and it is starting to look good.
