Parametric Design and Personalized Manufacturing

Due:  2 FEB 00  and  9 FEB 00

Objective:
Design and build a halo system that is used to immobilize the head and neck after injury.  For this project, the "patient" is a small wooden mannequin.  The intent of this project is to provide experience with:

• parametric solid modeling,
• personalized manufacturing (or mass customization), and
• rapid prototyping, particularly fused deposition modeling.

Project Activities:

• Design the halo system parametrically in Mechanical Desktop
• Measure the key parameters on the mannequin and update the parameterized design
• Build the halo system on the FDM machine
• Test the halo system on the mannequin during the lab on 2 FEB 00

• 2 FEB 00:  a completed parameterized design of the halo system using Mechanical Desktop

• 9 FEB 00:  a prototype of the halo system ready to be fitted to the patient

Grading:

parameterized design (50%):
    - is the design defined parametrically
    - is the parameterization consistent with the design intent
    - does it have a pleasing appearance
