The 23rd annual Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition

Sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and &Pi&Mu&Epsilon

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Department of Mathematics and the &Pi&Mu&Epsilon National Mathematics Honorary Society are pleased to announce that the nineteenth annual Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 from 7:00PM to 9:00PM in Crapo Hall room G-219. The Competition will consist of six problems, none of which require any knowledge of calculus. Only current Rose-Hulman freshmen are eligible to enter.
Papers will be judged by Mathematics Department faculty members, whose decisions will be final. The awards and certificates will be presented during homecoming ceremonies Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 11AM in Crapo Hall.
On the basis of their performance, entrants in the competition may be invited to join the group preparing for the Putnam Examination, a national mathematics competition for undergraduates usually held on the first Saturday in December. Beyond this, certificates of participation will be given to all entrants, and special recognition, some of it substantial, will be given to those submitting papers of exceptional quality.
Last year's problems and winners are posted on the second floor of Crapo Hall.
