Since 1977 108 Rose-Hulman students have completed the requirements for a Certificate in Russian Technical Translation in addition to fulfilling all the requirements for one or more degrees. Six students fullfilled the requirements for two degrees and one student for four degrees! The completion of the requirements for a technical translation program is especially arduous; it requires the student to take Russian for each of the twelve quarters he is enrolled as well as taking five addtional humanities a social science courses. The minimum humanities and social sciences requirement for an ordinary Rose-Hulman graduation is only nine courses; technical translation students must take a total of fifteen courses. What makes their acheivement even more remarkable is the fact that almost all of them (103) began the study of Russian at Rose-Hulman. This meant that they had to frequently take overloads to be able to meet all the requirements on time. Even more impressive than this is the fact that 38 of these students took time out from summer work to study in Russian for three to six weeks! These credits were merely decorative; they did not count toward to techical translation requirements. What a sacrifice these students made!
