1975-98: 15 trips, 177 participants, faculty development, international recruitment, national publicity

Since 1975 115 Rose- Hulman students have travelled and studied in Russia for up to six weeks. 45 of these students also took a four full years of Russian to meet the requirements for technical translator's certificates. Our fifteen trips to the USSR also included thirty (30) students from a variety of other colleges (Harvard, Standford, MIT, Carleton, Boston Univesity, Vanderbuilt, Uni. of Colorado, and neighboring colleges). From the beginning these programs provided the Rose-Hulman students with their first coeducation college experience (long before we went coed); twenty-one young women were included. Our language and cultural programs also included 28 post-graduate continuing education students: businessmen, professional translators, teachers, and practicing engineers. Although the programs were specialized in linguistic immersion and was known for their exceptional language training, 45 of the 177 participants had not previously studied the Russian language (They are marked with an asterisk.). Two students withdrew from the course and returned home after after a week or two in Moscow, one because of health problems during a heat wave and the other because he missed his girlfriend.

Four students (Eric Cegielski, David Rettberg, Jeff Papa, and Kevin Neier) have spent three summers in the USSR, four student (R. Keith Martin, John Stephens, John Holtz, Jeffrey Waters) two summers , and eighty-five (94) students one summer.

One student (John Holtz, Russian Tech Trans Certificate & Chemistry 1990) studied Russian and Chemistry as a graduate student at Kaunas (Lithuania) University of Technology under our exchange agreement. He took additional courses in Russia. Worked as an aide to the English department and served as a lab technician in the Chemistry department.

These trips provided thirteen (13) summers of professional development for Professor Priest and one sumer for Dr. Patrick Brophy (1983) and Danial Maramba (an adjunct instructor 1989) at no cost to the school. Other faculty that travelled to Russia with Professor Priest were Dr. Samual Hulbert, Dr. Noel Moore, Dr. Azad Siamakoun, Dr. Brij Khorana. Although not travelling directly with Professor Priest Dr. James Eifert did go to Russia to advance contacts begun earlier by us.

Also our programs brought us in contact with (1) Elena Merenova, who later became an adejunct instructor at Rose Russian; (2) her husband Andrei Merenov, who came over and received an MS in Chemical Engineering from Rose; (3) Donatas Masilionis, who came over and taught for two years in the Civil Engineering department; (4) numerous graduate students from Leningrad who came and studied in our Applied Optics program.

These programs probably generated more news stories in Indiana than any other RHIT program except sports.
