Since 1962 have developed and taught 30 different
humanities and social science courses to meet the needs of a growing (from
400 to 1500 students) engineering college, Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology ["The best private undergraduate engineering college in the
US without a Ph.D. program" (U.S. News & World Report)].
In 1973 initiated, developed, and taught a
four-year Russian technical translation certificate program for science
and engineering students; this included comparative stylistics of
technical discourse, theory and practice of translation. This program
eventually grew to two full time teachers.
By 1995 108 had graduated with the Russian certificates
. The technical translation program was
expanded to include German and resulted in a growth of interest in foreign
languages. Now approximately 40-45% of entering freshmen elect a foreign
language although one is not required.
