The tangential acceleration of a slender rod rotating about one end exceeds g before the rod reaches the horizontal. Falling chimneys exhibit the same behavior we see below in the stack of poker chips - - the chimney cracks about 1/3 of the way from the base because the bricks and mortar provide almost no tension, which is needed to hold it together as it rotates.
