MA471 Linear Algebra II is a second course in linear algebra. We will discuss advanced topics in linear and matrix algebra that are important in applications, though we will not be spending time on the applications themselves--the focus will be on developing and understanding the mathematical tools. Major topics covered will include diagonalization, the matrix exponential, the Jordan canonical form, Gershgorin disks, similarity transforms, quadratic forms, and Hermitian matrices; the LU, QR, and singular value decompositions; and vector and matrix norms, equivalence of norms, and conditioning of linear systems. If time permits, positive definite matrices will be covered as well.
Prerequisite: MA371 or MA373.
Grading: Weekly homework and three midterms. No final exam.
