This paper describes specific steps to develop and implement improvements to a mechanical engineering lab sequence by paying close attention to the learning objectives appropriate to engineering laboratories. The result is a proposed sequence of three new courses in the junior and senior years: Measurement Systems, Experiment Design, and Laboratory Clinic. In this paper, we provide the reader with a specific approach to implementing laboratory improvements based on learning objectives and an example of how those objectives are met in the proposed sequence.
