Text: Differential Equations and Linear Algebra by C. H. Edwards and D. E. Penney
Coverage: We will be covering material from Chapters 7, 9, 10, and supplementary handouts.
Class Grade: Your numerical grade will be determined by the following parts of the course listed below. After rounding your grade to one decimal place, your letter grade will be based on the following scale:
| 89.5 < or = Grade | A |
| 87.5 < or = Grade < 89.5 | B+ |
| 79.5 < or = Grade < 87.5 | B |
| 77.5 < or = Grade < 79.5 | C+ |
| 69.5 < or = Grade < 77.5 | C |
| 67.5 < or = Grade < 69.5 | D+ |
| 59.5 < or = Grade < 67.5 | D |
| Grade < 59.5 | F |
Please feel free to email me questions at any time. I check my email often so getting an email response will usually be quick.
I. Homework (0% or 10 % - you will decide on Thursday of Week 1). You get to decide whether or not you hand in the homework. If you decide to hand in homework, it will count 10% and quizzes will count 10%; otherwise, homework will be 0% and quizzes 20%. The homework assignments will usually be from odd problems so you can check your work, and the number of homework assignments will probably be between 20 and 30. The grader will simply count the number of problems you do; however, you must show your work to get credit.
The assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class - put them on a neat pile at the front of the classroom. In the upper right hand corner of the first page, put your box number, your name, and the assignment number in this order and vertically. If any of the information is missing or if there is not a proper staple, your grade will be zero. Your numerical score for this part will be MIN{(Your Total / (.95*Total))*10,10}, where Total is the total number of points. Notice that this computation will allow you to miss a couple assignments without being penalized.
ABSOLUTELY NO LATE HOMEWORK ACCEPTED.
DON’T EVEN ASK!!
If you are unable to attend class for some reason, you must make arrangements to have someone turn in your homework.
II. Quizzes (20% or 10%). The quizzes may be announced, unannounced, with Maple, or without Maple. Indeed, there may be short quizzes over the assigned reading, or there may be take-home (even group) quizzes. Your numerical score for this part will be MIN{(Q/(0.95*Total))*10,10}, where Q is your total quiz score and Total is the total number of quiz points.
No Make Up for Quizzes
If you have a legitimate excuse for missing a quiz, your quiz grade will be determined by your final exam percentage.
III. In Class Exams (lowest will count 15%; the next highest 20%; and the highest 25%).
Exam 1 - Thursday, December 19
Exam 2 - Thursday, January 23
Exam 3 - Thursday, February 13
No Make Up for Exams
If you have a legitimate excuse for missing an exam, your exam grade will be determined by your final exam percentage.
IV. Final Exam (20%) I do not hand back final exams. After keeping them for one quarter, I destroy them. You may stop by my office if you are interested in looking at yours.
Attendance: I believe that being in class will help you learn the material. Thus I think that you should attend class. Furthermore, when you are in class, I expect you to be an active participant by asking questions and answering questions. I will not tolerate activities not related to learning the material, and this includes sleeping. Students who sleep or need to put their heads on the desk will be asked to leave, and if this behavior persists, they will be removed from the class roster.
