MA 490 Topics in Tensor Calculus 4 credits
Prerequisites: Instructor Permission
Students should have had MA421 Tensor Calculus and Riemannian Geometry to gain the most out of this class, necessary alternate prerequisites are MA330 and MA371.
Course Description
This special topics course is a further exploration of tensor calculus concentrating on Lie Groups, Fiber Bundles and tensor analysis on such manifold structures. Lie Groups are algebraic groups with a manifold structure. Fiber bundles are an extension of tangent spaces to look at structures such as a Mobius band or a Klein bottle or a torus as objects over a circle. Applications to gauge theory (Yang-Mills theory) and particle physics may be given as time permits.
