Kay C  Dee

Kay C  Dee received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  After completing her graduate work, Kay C worked as first an Assistant and then an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.  She joined the faculty at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2004. Kay C served as the Founding Director of the Rose-Hulman Center for the Practice and Scholarship of Education, and is currently the Associate Dean of Learning and Technology and a Professor of Applied Biology and Biomedical Engineering at Rose-Hulman.

Dr. Dee has received a number of honors and awards for her teaching and research, including a state of Louisiana "Professor of the Year" award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, serving as a Teaching Fellow at the National Effective Teaching Institute, and more.  Dr. Dee's educational research interests include student learning styles, helping faculty be maximally effective in the classroom, and assessments of teaching and learning.  She is an author of the textbook An Introduction to Tissue-Biomaterial Interactions, and more than 50 graduate and undergraduate students have worked with her on biomaterials/tissue engineering research to elucidate and control events at the interfaces between cells and the surrounding biochemical and mechanical environment.

Dr. Dee's teaching portfolio includes courses on: biology; biomaterials; cell-biomaterial interactions; cell and tissue mechanics; bioethics, science fiction, and tissue engineering; engineering problem solving; statics; thermodynamics; MatLab and biological problem-solving; and teaching engineering. When she's not at work Kay C likes to knit wild things, read science fiction, cook, listen to classic jazz and funk, work on restoring the grooviness to her nifty 1970's modern house, and watch old movies with her cat, her daughter and her husband.
